No. 9 Long Beach State Drops Big West Opener

The Beach falls to UC San Diego, 10-9.
La Jolla, Calif. — Opening Big West play on Friday night, a late-game run and a last-second goal spoiled No. 9 Long Beach State's Big West opener as the Beach lost to No. 13 UC San Diego,10-9.
After leading 7-4 two minutes into the third period, the Tritons went on a 5-2 run the final 13 minutes of the game.
LBSU (10-10) got everyone involved early on as five Beach athletes scored throughout the game.
After taking a 2-1 lead in the first period, both teams scored three goals in the second period as the Beach led 5-4 at the break.
The Beach extended its lead to 7-4 three minutes two minutes into the third period after back-to-back goals from Orsi Hertzka and Elena Kotanchyan.
UCSD then went on a 3-1 run to tie the game 8-8 with 5:48 remaining in the fourth and took a 9-8 lead by Ciara Franke.
Kotanchyan knotted the game 9-9 when she scored with 1:19 left in the game.
Kotanchyan led the Beach with three goals while Orsi Hertzka and Anne De Kleer each scored two goals.
In the cage, Chelsea Oliver had a career-high 15 saves.
