No. 14 Beach Volleyball Splits Matches with Sweep of IVC, Loss to No. 11 Cal

The Beach split their first tri-dual of the season.
IRVINE, Calif. – No. 14 Long Beach State (0-2) split their first tri-dual of the season with a sweep of Irvine Valley College before falling, 3-2, to No. 11 Cal (2-1).
The Beach got their day started against the host Lazers and dominated. Only one set was lost in the second flight with every other flight finishing in two sets. The duo of Claire Newlander and Jillian Rodriguez had the quickest outing with a one-side 21-9, 21-12 victory in the fourth flight.
In the second dual of the day, Christine Deroos and Sophie Major got Long Beach State off to a hot start making quick work in the fifth flight 21-10, 21-16 for the first point of the dual. Emily Mattoon and Nicci Reinking gave the Beach their second point, winning the third flight 21-18, 21-19.
With an even 2-2 score, it came down to flight number two featuring Alice Pratesi and Sydney Stevens. The duo took the first set 21-15, but fell in the second set 21-18 forcing a decisive third. In a back-and-forth battle, it came down to extra points where Cal's Ainsley Radell and Ava Mann came out on top 17-15 to secure the dual for the Golden Bears.
The Beach end their first week of action with an 0-2 record and will look to bounce back on Tuesday as they host a tri-dual against Loyola Marymount and Stetson.
