Softball Takes Two Including Ranked Win In Second Day In The Desert

2/26/2022 3:44:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State now 3-1 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Sophia Fernandez finished off Long Beach State's first complete game of the season as Long Beach State defeated No. 24 BYU 4-2 in the opening game on Saturday, before holding off Texas Tech 8-7 to finish the day with a pair of wins.

BYU (9-4) took the first lead in the opening game, as a hit batter to start the second inning was pushed around to bring in the first run of the game. Fernandez was able to settle in though, and after a scoreless top of the third, Long Beach State (5-8) took the lead in the bottom half.

Jacquelyn Bickar got on base with a one-out walk, and senior Naomi Hernandez uncorked a home run to dead center, a two-run shot to give the Beach a 2-1 lead. The Cougars brought back a run to tie the game in the fifth inning, but LBSU once again had an answer.
Marissa Caballero singled to start another one our rally, and after a walk to Sara Olson and another hit from Hernandez loaded the bases, freshman Corissa Sweet singled to bring home two more runs.

Fernandez battled through two more innings, finishing with four strikeouts and giving up just three hits the sophomore grabbed her second win of the season against No. 24 BYU.

In the second game, Texas Tech (4-10) and Long Beach State went back and forth all afternoon long. Long Beach State struck first, capitalizing on a Red Raiders error to take a 2-0 lead. Texas Tech bounced back with a three-run home run from Peyton Blythe, and added one more in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Long Beach State had an answer in the fourth. Kyra Snyder kicked off the inning with a single, the first of four straight hits for the Beach making the score 5-2. With one out, and runners on the corners, fantastic baserunning from Bickar gave the Beach another run on a groundout to the circle, a run that would prove to be very important in the end.

After adding two more insurance runs in the sixth on a triple from Sweet and a single from Sinclair Lawhorn, the Beach took an 8-4 lead into the seventh inning.

Three straight hits would bring the Red Raiders within one run after a leadoff walk, making the score 8-7. Addison Kostrencich came on to pitch in relief and got a key strikeout followed by the final out to pick up her first save of her career in support of Shelby Frutoz who earned her first collegiate win.

Long Beach State will have another game against a top opponent to close out their time in desert, facing No. 9 Oregon at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Coverage will continue to be streamed on FloSoftball along with live scoring at www.beachlivestats.com.
