Justine Briones, Mikayla Ceballos both hit home runs to highlight the day’s efforts.
TUCSON, Ariz. – Justine Briones' two-run home run gave Long Beach State a third-inning lead over No. 9 Arizona in the first of two games at the Hillenbrand Invitational, but the Beach ended up losing both in the first day of three in Tucson.
In the opener, No. 9 Arizona worked around a jam in a scoreless first inning, and took a 1-0 lead after the second, but Long Beach State (2-5) grabbed the lead in the third inning. The seniors took center stage as Naomi Hernandez had her second hit of the game in front of Justine Briones, who hit her second home run of the season to center field to give the Beach a 2-0 lead.
Arizona answered back in the bottom half with an RBI double and a two-run home run from Carlie Scupin to retake the lead, and then tacked on three more with back-to-back home runs from Scupin and Izzy Pacho in the fifth. Addison Kostrencich closed out the inning in relief and worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning to finish off the game as Arizona won 7-2.
In the second game, the Beach lost the momentum early and never recovered against Loypola Marymount (3-3). After bringing down the Beach in order in the top of the first, the Lions hit a double and a single to open the game, and after a two-run hit put LMU on the board, a grand slam from Andrea Gonzalez made the score 6-0.
Another grand slam in the next inning from Morgan DeBord put the Lions in front 10-0 after two innings.
Long Beach State rallied late, as Sinclair Lawhorn singled to start the fourth inning, and Mikayla Ceballos hit her first career-home run in reward of her first career start, a two-run shot to make the score 11-2. Lawhorn would bring in a run herself in the fifth inning, but the damage was done as Loyola Marymount took the win, 12-3.
Long Beach State will face No. 16 Kentucky in the team's only game on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for Noon. The action will be streamed live via FloSoftball.
