
A Pair of School Records Set on Day One of MPSF Championships

The LBSU distance runners had a historic day in Spokane.
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Long Beach State track and field team finished up day one of their time at the MPSF Indoor Championships and were led by a historic performance from the distance runners. As a team, both the men's and women's teams sit in second place in the team standings.
Results
The distance medley squads were the headline on Friday as new school records were set on both the men's and women's sides. The quartet of Brieanna Tafoya, Hailey Danskin, Bronwyn Bunnell, and Ryley Fick posted a time of 11:45.19 to pass the previous record by over three seconds set back in 2012. For the men, Connor Phillips, Austin Brown, Alex Kalmar, and Michael Phillips posted a time of 9:48.77 beating the previous record by just under three seconds.
LeNaya Griffin won the women's 200m Dash and beat her personal record today with a time of 24.43. She now holds the third fastest time in Long Beach history for the 200m dash.
In both the men's and women's 5000m, LBSU had top ten program marks achieved. Raymon Ornelas finished fourth in the event and set a new lifetime-best with a 14:36.10 while Allie Scimia finished sixth with a time of 17:12.37. Both times rank as the fourth fastest times in their respective top ten times of all-time.
The throwers had a remarkable day as Long Beach State swept the first four spots in the men's weight throw, with Charlie Vernoy leading the way with a throw of 21.89m (71'10"). Alec Jones (64'6") finished second, with Sebastian Coleman (61'9.5") and Pablo Gomez (61'9") finishing third and fourth respectively. On the women's side, Malia Talavou placed third in the 20-pound Weight Throw matching her lifetime-best of 17.09m (56'1").
For Vernoy, it's a new lifetime-best as he still owns the second best mark in LBSU history. The throw also set a new facility record at the Podium in Spokane while moving him up to 16th in the NCAA ranks this season.
In the women's Pentathlon, Tayah DeSousa and Hailey Fune both had remarkable days placing second and third in the event, respectively. DeSousa's 3303 points marks the seventh most in program history while Fune's 3287 is the eighth most in program history.
Claire Gibson and Calista Apostol also finished one-two in the women's high jump. Gibson jumped 1.71m to take first and Apostol took second with a 1.66m jump.
The women in the 60m hurdles event saw three Beach runners qualify for the final tomorrow morning. Rahni Turner's time of 8.69 was good for second overall while Hailey Fune finished third with an 8.81, marking a new personal best. Tayah DeSousa also qualified for the finals finishing sixth with an 8.90.
The Beach saw three athletes qualify for the 60m Dash final tomorrow morning as Michael Hull, Elijah Harris, and Malik Harness all finished in the top seven. All three finished within two-tenths of each other with Hull posting a 6.97 followed by Harris' 6.98 and Harness' 6.99. Harris now ranks tenth in program history for the event with his new lifetime-best.
Similarly, the duo of Joseph Anderson and Justin Watterson qualified for the 60m Hurdles final tomorrow finishing third and fourth, respectively.
The Beach continues tomorrow at the MPSF Championship with the track events starting at 10:00am, and the field events starting at 10:30am.
