The Beach had eight players make their Long Beach State debut over two games in Puerto Vallarta.
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Long Beach State showed plenty of fight in the first day of the season, but came up one run short in a 4-3 loss to Memphis before falling 8-3 to No. 7 Washington in the first day of action for the Beach at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
Memphis (2-1) struck first, pushing across an unearned run in the top of the first, and escaping a threat in the bottom half. Naomi Hernandez, Sara Olson and Kyra Snyder all reached base to load the bases for Long Beach State (0-2), but Hallie Siems was able to keep the Beach off of the board in the inning.
The Tigers added a second run in the fourth inning, but Sophia Fernandez came on in relief and limited the damage in the frame. The sophomore worked scoreless fifth and sixth innings as well. Memphis was able to score what would end up being two critical insurance runs in the top of the seventh however, taking a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Olson sparked a one-out rally with a hit and Snyder walked in front of Justine Briones, who hit a three-run home run to center field to cut the lead to one. Cam Cecil kept the rally going with a walk, but an ensuing groundball double play ended the game.
In the second game of the day, redshirt freshman Shelby Frutoz got the nod in her first appearance for Long Beach State with the start against No. 7 Washington.
The Huskies took advantage of a leadoff double to push across a run in the first, and a two-run home run from Sara Willis extended the lead to 3-0. The Huskies would continue to put up runs, but the Beach extended the game as Snyder came around to score an unearned run in the top of the sixth.
Trailing 8-1 in the seventh, the Beach continued to battle. Freshman Corissa Sweet singled to start the inning, followed by another pinch hit single from a freshman in Savannah Magadan. RBI singles from Naomi Hernandez and Briones cut the lead to 8-3, but the gap was too big to claw back in the 8-3 defeat.
On the day, Long Beach State had eight new players make their debut, as Addison Kostrencich joined Frutoz in her first time in the circle. Additionally, Marissa Caballero, Ashleigh Inae, Jacquelyn Bickar, and Rebakah Durazo joined Magadan and Sweet in getting to the plate for the first time for LBSU on Friday.
Long Beach State will have a rematch with the Tigers to kick off Saturday's action at 10:30 a.m. PT, before facing another Top 10 opponent in No. 8 Arkansas at 4 p.m. Streaming coverage of the games from Puerto Vallarta will be provided by FloSoftball.
