11/10/2022 4:58:00 PM | Men's Water Polo
Rafael Real Vergara had a hat trick and Evan Cain scored two, including the winner as the Beach won at LMU 10-9.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Long Beach State and Loyola Marymount battled throughout, with neither team taking a lead larger than two goals throughout the contest, but ultimately Long Beach State never trailed and prevailed in sudden victory 10-9 to win their third straight, all on the road.
Evan Cain proved to be the hero for No. 6 Long Beach State (19-8) on the day, scoring the game-winner with 1:21 left in the first sudden death period. Richie Rimlinger picked up an exclusion for Loyola Marymount (15-8) and the Beach made the Lions pay, as Rafael Real Vergara found Cain who was able to hand the Beach the win in a thriller.
Cain also scored the first goal of the day Long Beach State a quick lead, but the teams were even at 3-3 after the first quarter. Goals from Vergara and Garrett Zaan would keep the Beach in front, and a goal in the closing seconds of the half from Vergara gave the Beach a 6-4 lead at halftime.
Leading 8-6 in the fourth quarter after a Matt Morris goal with 6:46 remaining, it was the Lions defense that came through for them in the final period. Two goals tied the match at 8-8 with 4:34 to play, and in a tense four minutes, neither team ended up scoring the rest of the way in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Zaan scored to put the Beach on top 9-8 in the first overtime, but Aden Mina equalized for the Lions, and then neither team scored in the second overtime, setting the stage for a thrilling sudden victory finish, the first of the season for Long Beach State.
The Beach will close the regular season with their final action in Golden Coast Conference play this Saturday, facing No. 10 UC Irvine at Noon in Irvine.
