Beach Tops Golden Coast Conference Again After Black And Blue Blowout

No. 6 Long Beach State are co-champs with Pacific after a 14-6 road win at UC Irvine.
IRVINE, Calif. – After a second quarter where Long Beach State outscored UC Irvine 6-1, the Beach went on to cruise to a 14-6 win against their Black and Blue Rivals and claiming a share in the Golden Coast Conference championship in the process.
Saturday's victory put No. 6 Long Beach State (19-8, 4-1 GCC) into a tie at the top of the standings with No. 7 Pacific, and the two will share the regular season crown after the Beach won the title outright last season.
No. 10 UC Irvine (14-12, 2-3 GCC) got off to a quick start, scoring the first two goals of the contest and holding a 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes from the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
Long Beach State roared back in the second quarter. After trading goals in the first two possessions, Garrett Zaan evened the score at 3-3, the second of six straight goals for the Beach that would put LBSU firmly in control. Two goals each from Rafael Real Vergara and Aleksandar Timotijevic put the Beach in front 7-3 at the half, and another goal from Bruno Chiappini made it seven straight for the Beach before the Anteaters were able to get back on the board.
A final Veragra goal pushed the lead to eight at 13-5 in the early stages of the fourth quarter, while a Caden Noreen penalty conversion led to the final score in the final minute.
Liam Ward got the start in goal for the Beach, making nine saves while holding UCI to just the four goals. Zaan and Vergara shared the scoring honors as both finished with a hat trick.
The win over the 'Eaters also secured a first-round bye for Long Beach State in next week's Golden Coast Conference Tournament, placing the Beach directly into the semifinals. Long Beach State will face the winner of the tournament's second game as the (2) seed, which will feature the hosts (3) UC Santa Barbara against (6) San Jose State.
