Men’s Water Polo Takes Down Hosts UCSB In Semis, GCC Finals Upcoming Tomorrow

11/19/2022 8:47:00 PM | Men's Water Polo

Freshman Bruno Chiappini scored four goals as the Beach advanced to the championship with a 15-9 win.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Long Beach State held the hosts to just a single goal in the second and third quarters, giving the Beach enough breathing room in a physical contest at UC Santa Barbara in a 15-9 victory.

That win sends No. 6 Long Beach State (21-8) into the Golden Coast Conference championship game for the third straight season, as the second-seeded Beach will face the top seed and their regular season co-champions, No. 7 Pacific.

The Beach first had to deal with the tournament hosts, third seeded UC Santa Barbara (14-13). The No. 10 Gauchos advanced with a win over San Jose State on Friday, and struck first with two quick goals from Sam Nangle in the first two minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

Long Beach State quietly chipped away, first taking a 3-2 lead on a goal from Raul Morales, and then puhsed out to a two-goal lead at 5-3 after finding Matt Morris. Playing with an extra man, the Beach were able to find Rafael Real Vergara in the closing seconds of the first half to take a 7-4 lead.

After the Gauchos scored the first goal of the third quarter, Long Beach State piled up three unanswered to pick up a 10-5 lead. A red card issued to UCSB after the opening sprint of the fourth quarter kicked the powder keg, and after a scrappy final period the Beach came out 15-9 winners.

Freshman Bruno Chiappini had a star turn on the night, leading the way for the Beach with four goals while Cain and Vergara each scored three goals. Andrej Bosanac led the way in the cage, making eight saves for the Beach.

Long Beach State and Pacific, the co-champions of the regular season, will meet one final time this season with even higher stakes, as the winner will advance to the NCAA Tournament. Action from Santa Barbara in the Golden Coast Conference Championship will start at 1 p.m. as the Tigers and Beach play with the trophy on the line.
