Long Beach State jumped out to a big lead and cruised to pick up a GCC win in Malibu.
MALIBU, Calif. – Garrett Zaan scored four goals in the fourth quarter, leading the way in an explosive period for No. 6 Long Beach State who went on the road and prevailed 17-10 at No. 9 Pepperdine Sunday afternoon.
Long Beach State (17-8, 2-1 GCC) and Pepperdine (12-12, 1-2 GCC) were all square after the opening quarter of action, as Evan Cain equalized to make the score 3-3 after the first eight minutes of action.
The second quarter was where Long Beach State took over. Feeding Zaan inside early for a quick goal, the Beach took a 4-3 lead in the first possession, and then went inside successfully in each of the next two trips to open up a 6-3. Aleksandar Timotijevic and Cain added two more before finding Zaan one more time as the Beach scored six unanswered in the stretch to take a 9-3 lead.
Up 9-4 at halftime, the Beach controlled the action in the second half, allowing the Waves to get no closer than five goals while piling up 17 on their won to pick up the impressive win.
Andrej Bosanac finished with 13 saves to key the defensive effort for Long Beach State on the night. Offensively for LBSU, alongside Zaan's four goals in total Cain and Timotijec each added three, as did Rafael Real Vergara who continues his charge up the record books, now just outside the program's Top 5 in career scoring.
Long Beach State continues Golden Coast Conference play next week, traveling to San Jose State for a league game on Saturday, November 5 scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
