Long Beach State three strokes off the lead as a team after the first round from Las Cruces, N.M.
LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Monday was Jasmine Leovao's turn to shine as the freshman finished the opening round at the Aggie Invitational with a 5-under par 67, leading the 82 golfers after 18 holes at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
Just one round after her twin sister Janae shot a 67, Jasmine took over the top spot with six birdies on the day, finishing 5-under to hold a two-stroke lead over her nearest competition on the day.
Sophomore Kristina Ponomareva had her best event of last season on this course, and played it well again on Monday, finishing one-over par with a 73 to tie for 16th place in the tournament. She was matched by junior Hannah Ko who also shot a 73.
Janae Leovao recovered with three birdies in her final five holes after a roller coaster start to the day to shoot a two-over par 74, tying for 30th overall. That late charge helped Long Beach State make up ground in the team standings as well combined with her sister's 67, and the Beach was -1 at 287 after the first of three rounds, three strokes behind the team leaders, Pepperdine.
Vanessa Richani made her season debut Monday, carding a 78 as the junior was the final player on the roster to get going in the fall.
Tee times are set for 8:30 a.m. for round two on Tuesday as the Beach will look to continue their strong play in the second of three rounds at the Aggie Invitational. Live scoring through Golfstat can be found at https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=teamPlayer&tid=25593.
