Long Beach Outlasts Cal Poly, 3-2, to Win Eighth Straight Contest

The Beach posted 14 total team blocks and Morgan Chacon logged a double-double in the victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State Women's Volleyball team has been on quite a run as the Beach secured their eighth-straight victory with a 3-2 [25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 16-25, 15-13] win over Cal Poly on Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Beach improve to 14-6 overall and 9-3 in Big West action, while Cal Poly drops to 12-10 on the year and 9-3 in conference play.
Long Beach stepped up in blocking defense as the Beach posted 14.0 total team blocks the most the squad as put up since registering 15.0 blocks against UC Irvine on Oct. 15. Leading the way at the net was sophomore middle blocker Kameron Bacon who tied her career-high with eight blocks, while senior middle blocker Callie Schwarzenbach and junior opposite Katie Kennedy each tallied six, and redshirt freshman setter Zayna Meyer added five.
The LBSU defense was solid as the Beach held the Mustangs to a .198 attack percentage on the night. In the backrow, senior libero Dylan Dela Cruz was masterful as she ran the court to pick up 23 digs marking her eight double-figure dig performance of the season. Joining Dela Cruz in double-figures was redshirt junior Morgan Chacon who logged 11 digs.
Morgan Chacon's 11 digs were paired with a team-leading 15 kills for her sixth double-double of the year. She also added two aces, while her sister Savana Chacon served up one in the contest to go along with seven digs, and two assists.
Also recording a multi-kill match for the Beach were senior outside hitter Victoria O'Sullivan (13 kills), Schwarzenbach (11 kills), and Kennedy (10 kills). Schwarzenbach hit .381 in the match (11-3-21), while O'Sullivan contributed three blocks, and Kennedy added six digs.
Pacing the balanced offense was Meyer who dished out 43 assists to go along with nine digs.
Long Beach State started off strong as the Beach hit .355 (16-5-31) in the opening set. Dela Cruz went back to serve with the game tied 17-all and led LBSU on a run that would put them up 21-17 and give the Beach the lead for good. From there, the Beach put away a 25-19 win on a kill from Kennedy.
Cal Poly fought back in the second set and took a quick 5-1 lead over Long Beach. The Mustangs held the lead throughout the set as Cal Poly led by as many as eight (18-10). With the game looking like it was going to be all Cal Poly, the Beach battled back and chipped away before making it a one-point game (20-19) and forcing a timeout by the Mustangs. Despite Long Beach State's efforts, Cal Poly managed to pull out the win, 25-22, and even the match at one set apiece.
The Beach turned in a strong third set performance that saw them hit .323 (12-2-31) and post an 80% sideout percentage. O'Sullivan was outstanding in the frame knocking down six kills on 11 errorless swings for a .545 attack percentage to lead the Beach in a game that saw LBSU use a 5-0 run to break the game open en route to cruising to a 25-16 win.
The back and forth battle between conference foes continued into the fourth set as Cal Poly claimed the set, 25-16. The Mustangs used several small scoring runs to jump ahead of the Beach and force a fifth and deciding set.
The final set saw the Beach and the Mustangs fight through eight ties and four lead changes in the closely contested set. Down 13-12, Long Beach State called a timeout to regroup. Following the break in action, the Beach played their game and forced a solid Cal Poly team into three consecutive errors as Long Beach took the game, set, and match, 15-13.
Cal Poly was led by Tommi Stockham who finished the match with 19 kills, eight digs, and one assist, while Maia Dvoracek added a double-double with 17 kills, 15 digs, three assists, and two blocks. Emme Bullis also logged a double-double as she posted 47 assists and 15 digs to go along with four blocks. Meredith Phillips and Lizzy Markovska each concluded the match with 10 kills, while Phillips also contributed six blocks and three digs. Meanwhile Markovska added nine digs and two blocks.
Long Beach State is riding its longest winning streak since 2014 when the program strung together 17 consecutive victories. That year, the Beach finished 16-0 in Big West action, won the league, and made their last appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Beach look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday, Nov. 1 when they host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
