UCLA won an extended second set and carried that momentum into a 3-0 win in Westwood.

LOS ANGELES – In a rematch up the road from opening night, Long Beach State again pushed UCLA, but the Bruins were able to hold off Women's Volleyball for a second straight night, winning in straight sets, 25-21, 30-28, 25-16, in Pauley Pavilion.

Long Beach State (0-2) were led by sophomore Sidney Hamaker, who finished with a match-high-tying 13 kills on .267 hitting. Madi Maxwell had a double-double with 23 assists to go with a match-high 15 digs, though the Bruins ultimately out-hit the Beach .232 to .148 on the night.

UCLA (2-0) pushed to an early lead in the set behind a Vivian Hickman ace, but the Beach bounced back and moved out to an 8-5 lead with a quick wrinkle by head coach Natalie Reagan, who inserted sophomore setter Kinga Ziolkowska to change things up. That led to kills from Kendal Murphy and Hamaker that gave the Beach the lead. UCLA pulled back to a tie at 14-14 and slowly established a lead. Up 22-18, Long Beach State would rally to cut the edge to two with a kill from Chloe Johnson at 23-21, but UCLA took the next two points to close out the first set.

The Bruins jumped out to a quick start in the second set with an early 5-1 lead. Long Beach State utilized an ace from Ziolkowska to cut the lead to 8-6, but then a sideout and a block from Maggie Li and Marianna Singletary forced the Beach into a timeout. Settled in after the break, Long Beach State went to work, ultimately pulling even with UCLA at 11-11 after a Kendal Murphy ace.

Maxwell found Reagan Hope to put the Beach in front and then won a joust for a two-point edge at 16-14. A run of sideouts followed until the Bruins tied the set at 19-19. An incredible rundown from Jelinek led to an Anabel Kotzakov kill for a 24-23 lead. The Bruins won two straight points to grab a service edge and finally finished off the set 30-28 in another thriller.

Two Hamaker kills and a service ace by Maxwell gave Long Beach State an early third-set lead at 6-5, but the Bruins rallied behind their best hitting of the match, pushing out to a five-point lead at the technical timeout, 15-10. In their best set of the two-match series, the Bruins closed out the win with a 25-16 victory.

Long Beach State will remain on the road, taking part in a tournament hosted by Utah in Salt Lake City. The Beach will start the tournament against Eastern Illinois on September 4, take on the hosts on Saturday, September 5, and finish the tournament on Sunday against Wyoming.
