Women’s Soccer to Host UC Santa Barbara in First Round of Big West Championships

Long Beach State begins their conference postseason run on Sunday.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State Women's Soccer has earned the four-seed for The Big West Championships beginning this weekend. They will host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, October 30 with a 6 p.m. kickoff for the first round.

WRAPPING UP THE REGULAR SEASON
• Long Beach State wrapped up their regular season with a tough 1-0 loss against UC Davis. After a scoreless battle, the Aggies scored in the 84th minute after a Beach defensive turnover. The loss forced the Beach down to the four-seed for The Big West Championships.
• LBSU was dominant throughout most of leage play, leading in virtually every offensive category going unbeaten through the first eight matches. Overall, they owned a conference-leading 12-goal differential outscoring their opponents 22-10.
 
THE BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS
• Long Beach State earned a four-seed in The Big West Championships putting them as an opening rond host against UC Santa Barbara. The other opening round matchup will be Cal State Fullerton hosting UC Irvine.
• Top-seeded Cal Poly will host the semi-final and final matches next week where they will play the winner of LBSU-UCSB in their semi-final matchup.
 
LAST POSTSEASON MATCHUP
•The Beach was last in the conference postseason during the 2018 season where they matched up with the Gauchos in the final. In that match, goals from Ashley Gonzales and Dana Fujikuni propelled LBSU to a 2-0 victory and the tournament championship. Imani McDonald was perfect in net recording five saves on her way to the clean sheet.
• In the opening round of the then-four team tournament, Long Beach took down UC Davis by the score of 1-0. Dana Fujikuni scored the lone goal of the match in the 49th minute.
 
HISTORY IN THE TOURNAMENT
• Long Beach State owns four Big West Tournament Championships, all within the last 12 seasons. Overall, they own 10 appearances, seven of which they made it to the finals. When playing as the four-seed, they own a perfect 2-0 record from when they won 2016 championship.
• In their 10 appearances, they are 8-4-3 and currently owns a four-match win streak in the Big West Championships with two wins and the title in both 2016 and 2018.
 
CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
• With the regular season officially over, Long Beach State ends the year as The Big West's highest scoring offense. Their 32 assists rank 39th in the NCAA and their 1.88 assists per game is 43rd. They also rank 52nd in total points and 55th in total goals.
• Individually, Lena Silano is still number one in the conference in virtually every category while ranking fourth in the the nation in total goals, fifth in total points, sixth in goals per game, and seventh in points per game. Her three-game winners also ranks 55th nationally.
• New to the national rankings is sophomore goalkeeper Zora Standifer. She now owns a Big West leading 0.828 save percentage which ranks 57th in the nation.
 
ALTERING THE RECORD BOOKS
• Overall the last two seasons, senior Lena Silano has etched her name all over the Long Beach State record books and continues to change them as the season goes.
• In single-season history, her 2021 campaign ranks second for game-winners, third for shots,fifth for goals, and seventh for total points. Going into the regular season finale, she already sits in third in single-season goals and fifth in total points. She also ranks third in total shots as well. She is just two goals shy of tying the single-season program record.
• For her career, she is fifth in game-winners, sixth all-time in shots, seventh in points, and eighth in goals scored.
 
THE SILANO SHOW
Lena Silano continues to lead the Beach this season and currently leads all of the Big West in points (34), goals (14), and tied for first in assists (6).
• The senior had recorded at least one point in seven consecutive matches, but had the streak snapped at Cal Poly. She owns a point in 12 of the team's 18 matches this season.
• She is currently the active Big West career leader in points, goals, goals per game, and shots while also ranking among the leaders in shots shots per game, points per game, and total assists.
 
THE CHERRIE ON TOP
• Freshman Cherrie Cox has made an immediate impact in her debut season at the Beach, playing her way into the starting lineup and becoming one of the top scorers in the entire conference. She currently leads The Big West freshmen in total points, goals, and assists and even ranks in the top five of all Big West players in each category as well.
• Prior to Cal Poly, she had scored a goal in four consecutive matches from 10/2 to 10/16.
 
ANCHOR IN THE BACK
• Maddy Perez is the reigning Big West Freshman of the Year and has continued to be a dominant force in the backfield for the Beach again as a sophomore. Starting in every single match this season, she leads the team in minutes for the second consecutive season.
• Serving as one of the center backs and primary taker of free kicks and corners, she is fifth on the team in total points with two goals and three assists thus far. She is likely to be among the top vote getters for Big West Defensive Player of the Year.
 
ZORA'S ZONE
• Zora Standifer took over the starting goalkeeper role after Houston-Shepherd was unfortunately injury, and the sophomore has taken full advantage of her increased time in net.
• Totaling 938 minutes in net, she owns a Big West leading 0.828 save percentage and ranks third with a 1.061 goals against average. Her save percentage also ranks 57th in the entire nation.
 
THE MARKSMAN
• Sara Ybarra has scored two very impressive goals this season making her one of six players on the Beach to record multiple goals this year. And both of her scores have been insanely impressive shots with distance.
• Her first came against UCSD sending a dart from the corner of the box and over everyone to hit the far upper corner for the score. Her second came last week against Cal Poly on a strike from about 35 yards out and over the goalkeeper's head to force a tie with the Mustangs.
 
SUMMER TIME AT THE BEACH
• Sophomore Summer Laskey started the season as a spark plug off the bench, but has now found herself in the starting lineup over the last several matches. In the midst of a breakout season, she is tied for second on the team and tied for fourth in the Big West with five goals to go along with three assists for 13 total points.
• She is one of just eight players in the conference with two multiple-point games recording her first career brace against Fresno State and then registering a goal and an assist against CSU Bakersfield.
 
GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
• Last year, the Beach totaled 58 points (goals+assists) on the season and had just 10 different student-athletes record at least one point. This year, they have a league-leading 98 points which is 17 more than the next highest team. It is the sixth highest total in program history.
• They also have a Big West leading 13 multi-point performances led by Silano's five and Cox's three. The two of them are the only two in the entire conference to have more than two such efforts.
 
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UC Santa Barbara was the first team in the conference to complete their regular season schedule with their finale being the 2-1 win over Long Beach last week clinching their spot in the postseason. They finished the season 4-3-3 in Big West play and 5-8-6 overall.
• In conference play specifically, they are the only team in The Big West Championships to own a negative goal different being outscored 11-10. They also rank dead last in total shots, shots per game, shots on goal, and shots on goal per game.
• The Beach leads the all-time series 17-14-1 and are 1-0-1 when matching up in The Big West Championships. Their last meeting was in 2018 when LBSU downed the Gauchos 2-0 to win the title and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
