Women’s Soccer Hits the Road for Pivotal Matches at Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara

The first place Beach hits the road for an important penultimate week of the season.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State is on the road for the penultimate week of the regular season, heading up the 101 for their two matches. Thursday is arguably the biggest matchup of the season as the first place Beach takes on second-place Cal Poly before heading to UCSB for a Sunday matinee with the Gauchos.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
• Long Beach State had an unbelievable last week with a perfect six-point where they outscored UC San Diego and CSUN a combined 10 goals to two. With the wins, they extended their unbeaten streak to seven straight matches.
• Against the Tritons, it was a historic 6-1 victory. The six goals came from three different goal scorers including a hat trick from Lena Silano. Cherrie Cox and Sophie Jones also found the back of the net in the win. In total, the team totaled 16 points to tie for the fifth most points in a single-game.
• In the match with CSUN, the Beach put four more goals into the back of the net for a 4-1 win. Silano scored two more goals along with goals from Summer Laskey and Cherrie Cox. In net Standifer added four saves giving her 14 for the week.
HISTORIC NIGHT IN LA JOLLA
• The Beach traveled down I-5 on Thursday for a matchup with UC San Diego. In what ended up being one of the most lopsided games in program history, LBSU made history in a 6-1 victory to extend their unbeaten streak.
• To start, their six goals tied the program record for most goals in a single game. Four of the six goals came in the first half, the most first half goals in a game for the Beach ever. With six goals and four assists, the team combined for 16 assists which is tied for fifth most points in a single game.
• Individually, Lena Silano continued to make her own history registering the ninth hat trick in program history and first since 2015. Adding an assist to her stat line, her seven points tied the record for most individual points in LBSU history set by Kim Silos in 2005.
UNBEATEN STREAK
• Long Beach State has yet to suffer a loss in a conference match this year, sitting at 5-0-2 in their first seven contests. It is the best start to a Big West season for the program since the 2008 season when they were 6-0-1 through the first six. That team went on to finish undefeated in the Big West at 7-0-1.
• In general, the seven-match unbeaten streak is the longest since the 2011 season when the team won eight straight matches to the Elite 8. That is tied for the longest unbeaten streak in program history.
CONFERENCE AND NATIONAL STAT RANKINGS
• The Beach enter the week as the sixth-ranked team in the West Region according to the United Soccer Coaches. They continue to lead The Big West in every offensive category and moved up the national rankings. With 32 assists, they rank 27th in the NCAA and 29th in assists per game. They also rank 44th in total goals and 51st in scoring offense averaging 2.07 goals per game
• Individually, Lena Silano's huge week launched her up the national rankings. Her 34 total points and 14 goals this season have her ranked fourth in all of NCAA while her 0.93 goals per game is fifth and her 2.27 points per game ranks sixth. She is also 42nd in the nation with three-game winners.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
• For the third time this season, Long Beach State claimed two of the three Big West weekly honors. Lena Silano was named Offensive Player of the Year for the third time this year and Cherrie Cox was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this year.
• Silano totaled 12 points for the week with five goals and two assists, including a hat trick against UCSD. She also scored the game-winner against CSUN and set the single-season record for most shots in a game. Top Drawer Soccer also named her to their National Team of the Week.
• Cox also had an insane week totaling seven points on two goals and three assists. She notched a goal and an assist in the win over UCSD then her second goal and two more assists against CSUN. Her second assist against the Matadors came on Silano's game-winner.
ALTERING THE RECORD BOOKS
• Overall the last two seasons, senior Lena Silano has etched her name all over the Long Beach State record books and continues to change them as the season goes.
• In single-season history, her 2021 campaign ranks second for game-winners, third for shots,fifth for goals, and seventh for total points. With three more games in the regular season, she already sits in third in single-season goals and fifth in total points. She is just two goals shy of tying the single-season program record.
• For her career, she is fifth in game-winners, sixth all-time in shots, seventh in points, and eighth in goals scored.
THE SILANO SHOW
• Lena Silano continues to lead the Beach this season and currently leads all of the Big West in points (34), goals (14), and tied for first in assists (6).
• The senior has notched at least one point in 12 of the 15 matches this year and is currently riding a six-match point streak, registering at least one point in all seven Big West contests.
• She is currently the active Big West career leader in points, goals, goals per game, and shots while also ranking among the leaders in shots shots per game, points per game, and total assists.
THE CHERRIE ON TOP
• Freshman Cherrie Cox has made an immediate impact in her debut season at the Beach, playing her way into the starting lineup and becoming one of the top scorers in the entire conference. She currently leads The Big West freshmen in total points, goals, and assists and even ranks in the top five of all Big West players in each category as well.
• She has scored a goal in each of the last four matches beginning with the Hawaii match and has also registered at least one assist in three of those four.
SUMMER TIME AT THE BEACH
• Sophomore Summer Laskey started the season as a spark plug off the bench, but has now found herself in the starting lineup over the last several matches. In the midst of a breakout season, she is tied for second on the team and tied for fourth in the Big West with five goals to go along with three assists for 13 total points.
• She is one of just eight players in the conference with two multiple-point games recording her first career brace against Fresno State and then registering a goal and an assist against CSU Bakersfield last week.
GET EVERYONE INVOLVED
• Last year, the Beach totaled 58 points (goals+assists) on the season and had just 10 different student-athletes record at least one point. This year, they have a league-leading 94 points which is 27 more than the next highest team. They currently have nine different athletes that have registered a goal and 12 that have recorded an assist.
• They also have a Big West leading 13 multi-point performances led by Silano's five and Cox's three. The two of them are the only two in the entire conference to have more than two such efforts.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
• Cal Poly enters the week tied for second in The Big West standings with a 4-1-2 mark in league play and are 7-6-2 overall coming off a 1-0 victory at UCR and a draw at Fullerton.
• They have outscored their opponent by just one this year with a differential of 20-19, but have recorded shutouts in four straight matches. Camille Lafaix paces the team offensively with four goals and nine points. In goal, it's been primarily Mackenzie Samuel who owns a 1.25 goals against average and a .778 save percentage.
• Historically, the Mustangs lead the all-time series 13-9-4, but the Beach has won four of the last six meetings including the last matchup in San Luis Obispo back in 2019.
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UC Santa Barbara enters the week in seventh place with a 3-8-6 overall record and 2-3-3 mark in Big West play. They are coming off a 1-1 week with a loss to Fullerton and win over Riverside.
• They have been outscored 27-15 in their 17 matches this season with a shot on goal percentage of .395 to an opponents .452. Lauren Helwig and Meg Burling have been the leading duo with five goals and four goals, respectively. In goal, Evann Smith owns the bulk of the minutes with a 1.59 goals against average and .604 save percentage.
• In their history, the Beach leads the all-time series 17-13-1 having won nine of the last 12 meetings. The Gauchos, however, have won the last two meetings at their home stadium and have only lost one of their last six games at home this season.
