LBSU Women’s Basketball Earns Hard-Fought Win Over UC Irvine

Ma’Qhi Berry led the Beach with a season-high 15 points in the Black and Blue Rivalry

IRVINE, Calif. – Long Beach State used a strong second half to defeat UC Irvine, 62-50, on Saturday afternoon at the Bren Events Center.
With the win, the Beach improve to 12-2 on the year and 5-1 in the Big West, while the Anteaters drop to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Ma'Qhi Berry turned in a season-high 15-point performance to go along with three assists, two rebounds, and a block as the Beach shot 39.2-percent from the field and connected on 21-of-23 free throws to take down the Anteaters.
Maddi Utti had another solid game for the Beach as she tallied 12 points and led the squad with eight rebounds and five steals. Justina King was another double-figure scorer with 11 points, a team-best eight assists, and two rebounds.
The game began as a back and forth affair that saw Long Beach State and UC Irvine deadlocked at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. Kianna Hamilton-Fisher gave LBSU its first lead of the contest with a three at 7:12 in the second quarter (17-15), but the Beach found themselves down by two (25-23) as the clock was running down. Enter Utti who picked up a key steal and ran it back for a layup to send the Beach into halftime tied 25-25.
Still high on the momentum from the end of the first half, the Beach used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to open up the game 41-30 as the Anteaters were held scoreless for five minutes by the stout LBSU defense. By the end of the frame, the Beach lead the 'Eaters 47-35.
Despite UC Irvine opening the fourth quarter with five-straight points to cut the Beach's lead down to seven (47-40), Long Beach State would not let up. The Beach went on another run and led by as many as 16 (46-62) before winning the game 62-50.
UC Irvine was led by Kayla Williams and Chloe Webb who had 15 and 12 points, respectively. Webb also led the squad with seven rebounds and four steals.
Long Beach State will host UC Riverside on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
