LBSU Posts Six Program Top Ten Marks on Day One of Air Force Invitational

The Beach had a record book altering day one of the 2022 season.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Long Beach State track and field team altered the record bookson their first day of the 2022 season, posting six top ten marks in the all-time indoor record books. As a team, the men's squad sits in second place overall while the women are in fifth.

After finishing one-two in every regular season meet they competed in last year, Charlie Vernoy and Alec Jones continued that trend to open their 2022 indoor season. In the 35-pound weight throw, Vernoy posted a mark of 20.45m as the top collegiate finisher with Jones behind him at 19.10m in second.
Both marks shattered their previous lifetime-bests set back in 2020 and enter the program's top ten all-time. Vernoy's throw of 67'1.25" ranks second all-time while Jones' mark of 62'8" ranks ninth.
On the women's side, Malia Talavou posted a lifetime-best of 17.09m (56'1") giving her a sixth place finish in the 20-pound weight throw and the sixth best mark in Long Beach State history.
Rahni Turner and Maggie Lear both had phenomenal collegiate debuts entering the LBSU all-time top ten in the women's 60m Hurdles and women's Pole Vault, respectively. Turner posted a time of 8.61 putting her fourth all-time and advancing her to the finals tomorrow afternoon. Lear cleared 3.65m (11'11.75") en route to a fourth place finish as she now sits in eighth in program history.
The sixth top ten mark of the day went to LeNaya Griffin in the women's 200m Run where she ran a 24.90 in the semis. That time ranks eighth in Long Beach State history as well and qualified her for the event's finals tomorrow afternoon.
Wrapping up the men's weight throw, Sebastian Coleman came in fourth of the collegiate athletes with a mark of 17.95m (58'10.75") while Pablo Gamez posted a sixth place finish at 17.89m (58'8.5") in his Long Beach State debut. Coleman scored five points for the Beach while Gamez scored three.
The Beach scored eight total points in men's and women's Long Jump. For the men, Elijah Harris finished fourth at 6.88m (22'7") and Miguel Orozco finished eighth with a mark of 6.82m (22'4.5"). Hailey Fune was the point scorer on the women's side, finishing seventh with a lifetime-best jump of 5.42m (17'9.5").
Tayah DeSousa just missed out on a point scoring spot in her collegiate debut, finishing ninth in women's Long Jump. Her mark 5.33m (17'6") was less than an inch shy of eighth, but gives her a new lifetime-best.
Out on the track, Austin Brown qualified for the 400m finals tomorrow afternoon after winning the third heat today. His time of 48.89 put him in fourth overall and marks a new lifetime-best.
In the men's 60m Dash, Michael Hull ran a 6.984 in his preliminary round while Elijah Harris ran a 7.03 60m. The duo finished thirteenth and fifteenth, respectively, qualifying for the semifinals.
Long Beach State saw three athletes advance to the semis in the women's 60m Dash as Kaitlyn Williams, LeNaya Griffin, and Natalie Tolento all posted career-bests. Williams posted a time of 7.86 in her preliminary followed by a 7.88 in the semis, putting her in tenth overall. Griffin advanced through the prelims with a 7.91 before running a 7.93 for a thirteenth place finish. Tolento moved on with a 7.88 in the prelims and then ended in fourteenth with a 7.94 mark.
The Beach will wrap up action at the Air Force Invitational tomorrow. The field events will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the track events starting at 12:00 p.m.
