Long Beach State Drops Road Contest to CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's basketball team struggles offensively as they dropped a 64-50 contest to CSUN on Saturday afternoon at the Matadome.
The Beach (10-2, 3-1 Big West) shot just 29.3-percent from the field, while allowing CSUN (6-7, 2-1 Big West) to finish the game with a 47.1 field goal percentage. The Matadors led the Beach in rebounding (39-34), assists (11-10), and steals (14-10).
LBSU's defense remained on point as they forced CSUN into 21 turnovers, but were only able to convert 10 points off of turnovers.
Both teams started out slow, the Matadors made a splash in the second quarter as they connected on 8-of-11 field goals for a hot 72.7 shooting percentage. Meanwhile, the Beach struggled, shooting just 18.2-percent from the field and making just two field goals in the frame.
The second quarter saw CSUN use a 14-0 run to break the game open as the Beach went into halftime trailing 31-18.
Despite Long Beach State's efforts, the Matadors remained in control throughout the second half. CSUN led by as many as 16 (40-24) in the third quarter. However, the Beach continued to chip away as they were down by 10 (44-34) at the end of the frame.
CSUN kicked off the fourth quarter scoring five-straight points to jump back out to a 49-34 lead. From there, the Matadors extended their lead to as many as 17 (60-43) with 2:08 remaining. The Beach would eventually fall by 14 points, 64-50.
Senior forward Maddi Utti led the way for Long Beach State as she concluded the game with her second double-double of the season. Utti's 17 points and 13 rebounds led LBSU. Joining Utti in double digits was Jasmine Hardy who finished with 11, while adding three boards. Justina King and Ma'Qhi Berry each tallied nine points, while Berry added five rebounds and three assists, while King contributed five assists, four steals, and three boards.
CSUN had three players in double figures led by Jordyn Jackson's 16 points. Tess Amundsen notched a double-double with 12 points and as many rebounds. Kayanna Spriggs concluded the game with 11 points.
Long Beach State looks to get back on the winning track on Thursday, Jan. 20 when the Beach host UC San Diego at the Walter Pyramid. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
