Rambo was part of the inaugural class of the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Two-sport legend and Olympic Medalist John Rambo passed away at the age of 78 last weekend.
Rambo was a standout athlete in both Basketball and Track and Field at Long Beach State, making an incredible mark in just two seasons at LBSU.
Rambo became Long Beach State's first University Division National Champion in track and field, winning the 1964 High Jump by clearing seven feet and also setting a PR of 7'1.25", a mark that still stands fifth all-time at the Beach after over 50 years.
He went on to compete at the 1964 Toyko Olympics, winning a Bronze Medal in the high jump.
Turning his attention to basketball, he led the 1964-65 Long Beach State team under Dick Perry in scoring at 20.3 points per game as well as rebounding at 12.7 per game, both of which still rank in the single-season Top 10 at the Beach. That team went 17-9 overall, and following the season, Rambo became the first ever player from Long Beach State drafted by the NBA, selected in the sixth round by the St. Louis Hawks.
Rambo was 17 selected as part of the inaugural class of the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.
