LBSU Plays UC Riverside to a Scoreless Draw in Double Overtime

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State (5-4-2, 2-0-1 BWC) picked up a point on the road, playing UC Riverside (3-6-1, 0-2-1 BWC) to a scoreless draw on Thursday night.
Freshman Zora Standifer made the first collegiate start of her career, playing all 110 minutes and notching her first career shutout. The true freshman totaled three saves on the night with two coming in the first half and the third coming in the 63rd minute.
Myah Baksh threatened right out of the gate, putting the first shot on goal in the fourth minute. Unfortunately, the UCR keeper got a hand on it knocking it over the crossbar for the save. For the next 40 minutes of the first half, the two teams battled back and forth but neither side could find the back of the net.
The second half was more of the same until the 68th minute when a Highlander foul gave the Beach a free kick just outside the box. Lena Silano took a shot toward the far side, banging it off the post and ricocheting out toward the corner.
Looking to avoid overtime, Long Beach State found themselves on a run with Alyssa Reyes in another buzzer beater situation. The freshman took her shot, but an early dive from the keeper at the top of the box cleared it forcing the game into extra time.
The Beach saw the only real scoring chance of the two overtime periods in the 98th minute as Kaylee Ramirez launched a great ball into the box off a corner kick. However, nobody could get a decent opening to take a shot as the ball was eventually sent downfield by the Highlanders.
With the draw, Long Beach State remain unbeaten and earns a point in the Big West standings, giving them seven through three games.
The Beach returns to action on Sunday at Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Titan Stadium.
