Masterful Set Piece in 89th Minute gives LBSU 2-1 Win over Fullerton

The Beach moved to 3-0-1 in conference play.

FULLERTON, Calif. – A beautiful set piece play from Daria Petredes, Kaylee Ramirez, and Lena Silano with just over a minute left gave Long Beach State (6-4-2, 3-0-1 BWC) the victory over Cal State Fullerton (4-9, 1-3 BWC) on Sunday night.

The win gives the Beach sole possession of first place in the Big West standings with 10 points through the first two weeks of the season.

Long Beach State registered five shots before Fullerton put together an offensive possession in the first half. However, the Titans found the back of the net first, scoring in the 19th minute on a penalty in kick from Callie Petrey-Juarez.

Despite an 11-4 shot advantage, the Beach found themselves trailing by a goal after the first 45 minutes.

The equalizing goal came from the conference's leading scorer, Lena Silano, at the 55:43 mark. Emily Jauregui intercepted a Cal State Fullerton clear, sending it toward Silano at the top of the box. The junior had space sending it near-post with her right foot past the diving goalkeeper for her eighth goal of the year.

With time winding down, Long Beach State was awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. The trio of Petredes, Ramirez, and Silano surrounded the ball with Petredes ultimately sending it to the near-side of the box for Ramirez, who centered it perfectly for a one-touch shot from Silano for the goal.

Petredes gets her second assist of the year while Ramirez earns her sixth, putting her in a tie atop the Big West leaderboards.

With two more goals today, Silano has officially entered the all-time record books. She ranks tied for fifth with four game-winners in a single-season and tied for ninth most goals in a single-season with nine. She is also the second fastest in program history to eight goals, nine goals, and 20 points in a season.

Long Beach State will look to keep things rolling next week as they host UC Irvine on Thursday at George Allen Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
