Long Beach State Takes Down Hawaii 3-1

Long Beach State moves to 2-0 to begin conference play.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (5-4-1, 2-0 BWC) won their second straight game to open Big West play, taking down Hawaii (0-6-1, 0-2 BWC) 3-1, on Sunday night. It is the first time the Beach has started a conference season 2-0 since 2015.

Lena Silano got the scoring started with her league-leading seventh goal coming in the 18th minute. Her opportunity came off a corner kick from Maddy Perez that found its' way into the box off a defender and into Silano's control. The Hawaii keeper got a hand on it, but the shot was too strong back-post giving the Beach a 1-0 lead early.

The Aguora Hills native continues her hot pace toward altering the record books as she is now tied for the second-fastest to seven goals in a season (10 games). The only player faster was Nadia Link in her record-setting 2011 season.

At the break, it was an evenly fought battle as both teams recorded six shots through the first 45. The Rainbow Wahine led in shots on goal as Morgan Houston-Shepherd had to record three saves in the half to preserve the shutout.

The game-winning goal came in the 78th minute as Kayla Cannon got out in front of the defense and sent a rocket near-post to beat the keeper. The pass down field came from Daria Petredes in her first game back after missing the last seven games due to injury.

For Cannon, it is her second goal of the year, both of which have been game-winners.

As the game entered the final five minutes of play, both teams ramped up their aggressiveness but a loose ball on the Long Beach half was sent downfield to Alyssa Reyes by Kaylee Ramirez. The freshman forward, Reyes, found herself in a one-on-one with the Hawaii keeper putting it far-post for her first career goal.

For Ramirez, it marks her league-leading fifth assist of the season.

Hawaii was not ready to quit though, putting together a final push and ending the Beach shutout with 20 seconds to play. A corner kick from Morgan Meza led to Trini Quiroz' first goal of the season to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Zora Standifer made her second career appearance and recorded the first save of her career in the 86th minute.

Long Beach State ends their four-game home stand and hits the road next week as they continue conference play at UC Riverside on Thursday.
