LONG BEACH, Calif. – Fresh off the 2021 Big West Conference Championship, the Long Beach State men's golf team looks to bring that momentum into the 2021-22 season as they kick off the year at the Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., on Monday, September 20, in a tournament hosted by Washington.
The Husky Invitational will take place at Gold Mountain Golf Club and will feature 16 teams including Seattle, Oregon, Oregon State, St. Mary's, Missouri, San Jose State, Boise State, Idaho, Nevada, Southern Miss, Toledo, Washington State, fellow Big West school Cal Poly, and host Washington.
The three-round, two-day tournament will begin on Monday at 8 a.m., with the first 36 holes. The Husky Invitational will conclude on Tuesday, September 21 with the final 18 holes.
Long Beach State head coach Michael Wilson begins his fifth season at the helm of the Beach men's golf program as he is joined by first year assistant coach Murray Naysmith. Last season, Wilson was named the 2021 Big West Conference Coach of the Year becoming just the fourth coach in LBSU history to win the award after leading the Beach to its third Big West Conference Championship in program history.
The Beach return five letterwinners in seniors Tyler Schafer and Caesar Cheng, redshirt junior Bryce Kvick, and sophomores Isaac Rodea and Clay Seeber. Additionally, LBSU welcomes redshirt freshmen Andrew Hoekstra and Sebastian Vallejo, along with incoming freshmen Steven Deutsch and Ian Gilligan, and senior transfer Jack Ainscough.
Seeber returns for his sophomore season after an impressive rookie campaign in which he was named Big West Tri-Freshman of the Year. He recorded three top 10 finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Big West Conference Championships in which he shot a 2-under par (71-72-72) for 214.
Rodea will be back in Black & Gold for his sophomore season after being named to the Big West All-Second Team last season. Another All-Conference selection back on the green for Long Beach State is Schafer who was a 2021 Honorable Mention selection.
