Michael Wilson was hired as the 11th head coach of the Long Beach State Men’s Golf program in July of 2017. In just four seasons, Wilson led the Beach to their third Big West Conference title and the program’s fourth NCAA Regional appearance in 2021.
With Wilson at the helm in 2021, the Beach earned a pair of top two finishes, four top five performances and six top 10 showings in nine tournaments. Wilson was named Big West Coach of the Year, while senior Hunter Epson was awarded Big West Player of the Year. Freshman Clay Seeber finished the season in a three-way tie for Freshman of the Year. Overall, Long Beach State boasted five Big West All-Conference selections as Epson and Seeber were named to the First Team, while Isaac Rodea earned Second Team honors, and Hunter Reed and Tyler Schafer collected Honorable Mention status.
Wilson entered his third season at the helm of the Beach in 2020, and after competing in seven contests, only three of which occurred during the spring season, found their season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in those few games, Wilson led his squad to a pair of second place showings and four top five finishes. Highlighting the 2020 season was Hunter Epson winning the Nick Watney Invitational and Owen Avrit finishing as co-medalist in a four-way tie for first a the Husky Invitational.
In 2019, Wilson led Long Beach State to a sixth-place finish at the Big West Championships. Under Wilson’s tutelage, the Beach had two Big West First Team selections in Joe Fryer and Hunter Epson. Meanwhile, Tyler Schafer was named to the Second Team and collected Freshman of the Year honors.
In his first season at the Beach, Wilson led the Beach to a fourth place finish at the Big West Championships. Junior Joe Fryer was a First Team All-Big West selection after twice winning Big West Golfer of the Month in 2018.
Wilson comes to the Beach after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington. While at Washington, Wilson helped the Huskies improve their finish at the Pac-12 Championships in each of his three seasons, most recently tying for third place in 2016-17 as Wilson managed the team while head coach Alan Murray was home for the birth of his child.
In each of his three seasons, Wilson helped Washington reach the NCAA Regionals, and the Huskies made an NCAA Championship appearance in 2015, finishing tied for 15th while Cheng-Tsung Pan finished as the individual runner-up.
Wilson entered coaching following three seasons on the Canadian Professional Golf Tour. He first worked as an assistant golf professional and lead instructor at Santa Lucia Preserve in Carmel, Calif., and then made the move into collegiate coaching at Washington.
His pro career came on the heels of a tremendous collegiate career at California. A top golfer with the Golden Bears, Wilson was the 2003 Pac-10 Co-Freshman of the Year, and played a big role in Cal’s 2004 NCAA National Championship. During his time at California, Wilson was the individual winner of three tournaments, a school record.
