Beach Continue Offensive Fireworks To Close Four-Game Sweep Of Hawai’i

5/1/2021 10:18:00 PM | Softball

Long Beach State scores 50 runs in three-run rule victories on the road at Hawai’i in four games.

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The offense continued to shine and came close to a number of school records in a 17-9 win to close out the conference sweep at Hawai'i and then added one more in style with a 15-3 win for a four-game sweep of the Rainbow Wahine.

Long Beach State (25-6, 19-2 Big West) scored 13 runs in the first inning to open the day, tied for the second-most runs in an inning in program history. Hawai'i (11-13, 10-8 Big West) in fact picked up the first out of the inning, but then Long Beach State put the next 13 runners on base, and all 13 came home to score to blow the game apart.

Big hits in the frame came from Suzy Brookshire, who singled to open the scoring, a two-run double from Emily Salazar, a second single in the inning from Suzy Brookshire and finally a three-run home run from Breezy Wise who knocked out the third Hawai'i pitcher of the game and inning.

Long Beach State added four more runs in the game. Justine Briones homered for the second straight game, hitting a three-run shot in the third inning, while Rylie Seip hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to account for Long Beach State's 17-run total. The Rainbow Wahine made a charge in the fourth inning with a grand slam, but Moran Quinlan and Samantha Fowler came on an closed the door on UH rallies in the fourth and fifth innings respectively to seal the win. Kellie White picked up her 13th win of the season for the Beach.

Ultimately, Long Beach State's 17 runs in the win were the most in a Big West game for the Beach since a 19-0 win over Utah State 16 years ago in 2005.

In the final game of the series, a non-conference contest, the Beach did not let up on the way to another run-rule win. After putting their first two runners on, Brookshire drove home a run with an RBI single, and Salazar then hit her first career home run, a three-run shot to give the Beach a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

After a one-inning respite, LBSU went back to work in the third, batting around for the second time on the day. The inning started with a double from Wise, and despite picking up a pair of outs, the two out rally was on. After a walk to Rylie Seip, Maddy Ruffin doubled to scored two and keep in the inning going. RBI singles from Alyssa Gonzalez and Brookshire along with multiple errors from UH led to a six-run inning.

The Beach added more insurance in the fourth inning with the bench getting their moment. After an error to start the inning, Seip and Ashley Machado singled to load the bases. Sara Olson singled to score one in station to station softball, and then Sinclair Lawson picked up her first collegiate hit, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 13-0. Brookshire and Wise followed with two more RBI singles to give LBSU a 15-0 lead.

UH added three runs over the final two innings to spoil the shutout, but Samantha Folwer collected her second win and second complete game of the weekend, striking out nine.

Long Beach State will have a bye week for conference play this weekend with CSU Bakersfield opting out, and so will turn their attention to the Pac-12 in No. 2 UCLA. The teams will make up the previously postponed game from earlier this season and add one more in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the LBSU Softball Complex.
