Two Grand Slams Highlight Two Big Wins For Softball At Hawai’i

Naomi Hernandez, Justine Briones both hit grand slams as Long Beach State takes both games at Hawai’i on Friday.
Three home runs in a big second inning got the day off to a strong start for Long Beach State (24-6, 18-2 Big West). After a quiet first inning, Breezy Wise hit her second home run of the season to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead on the road at Hawai'i (11-11, 10-7 Big West)
Emily Salazar followed with a walk, and after singles from Kyra Snyder and Justine Briones loaded the bases, Naomi Hernandez hit the second home run of the season for Long Beach State to make the score 5-0. A single from Lilyanna Martinez and a two-run home run by Alyssa Gonzalez added two more runs as the Beach opened up a big lead through two innings.
Hawai'i answered back with a lone run in the bottom of the third, but the Beach would extend the lead to eight runs in the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Suzy Brookshire walked and scored on a double from Wise, and then the senior scored on a single from Emily Salazar to make the score 9-1.
The Rainbow Wahine pushed one more across in the bottom of the fourth on an unearned error, but the Beach was able to again extend the lead to eight. Martinez walked with one out in the fifth inning, and with two outs, Brookshire doubled to score the freshman and make the score 10-2.
Kellie White closed out the complete game with a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the fifth, improving to 12-4 on the year.
The Beach also picked up a tremendous performance in the circle in game two from Samantha Fowler, who had a career-high 12 strikeouts while throwing her first career complete game.
The offense had another tremendous game in support of the junior. In the second inning, Salazar and Snyder singled and after a hit batter, Naomi Hernandez singled to bring home Salazar and give the Beach the lead.
Wise extended the edge with her second solo home run of the day, and Gonzalez extended her hitting streak to 17 games with a solo home run in the fifth, making the score 3-0.
In the seventh, Gonzalez hit her second home run of the contest and third of the day, a massive home run that cleared the high netting at Wahine Stadium. Having rattled starting pitcher Ashley Murphy at that point, Hawai'i loaded the bases in front of Justine Briones, who hit a grand slam, the second of the day to extend the lead to 8-0. The Rainbow Wahine scraped a run across in the bottom of the seventh after a collision knocked what would have been the final out loose, but Fowler closed out her complete game and the Beach picked up the second win.
The series continues on Saturday, with a final conference game set to start at 5 p.m. Pacific with a non-conference game to close the series at 7 p.m. PT. Both games will once again be streamed via BigWest.TV, with live stats at www.beachlivestats.com.
