The Dirtbags won their first series of 2021 with a 3-2 victory over the Tritons on Saturday.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State (6-6, 6-6 BWC) took the series at UC San Diego (7-13, 4-4 BWC) losing with a 3-2 victory over the Tritons on Saturday. It is the first series win of 2021 for the Dirtbags and puts their record at .500 for the first time this season.

Luis Ramirez (2-1) got the start in the series finale and posted his third quality start of the season. In 6.1 innings, the freshman allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

The Tritons got to Ramirez early as a single and a double from the first two hitters in the bottom of the first would both come around to score on RBI groundouts as UC San Diego jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

Long Beach State responded with a run of their own in the top half of the second as Connor Burns connected for a leadoff double, his first extra-base hit as a Dirtbag. The freshman catcher would come around to score on an RBI groundout from Jesse Lopez.

The big swing of the day came off the bat of Jonathon Long in the top of the third. After an Aidan Malm single got the inning started, the third baseman launched his second home run of the weekend to right center giving the Dirtbags a 3-2 lead.

Neither offense could get anything going after that as both pitching staffs put up zeros the rest of the way.

The Dirtbags had plenty of chances stranding the bases loaded in the sixth and eighth innings. They would end up leaving a total of 11 runners on base for the ballgame.

Long had a monster weekend slashing .467/.556/1.000 across the four games. He recorded at least one hit in every game of the series including two doubles and two home runs. The freshman also scored four runs while driving in five more.

Connor Kokx had another quiet day, but extended his reached base streak to 13 straight games. With a first inning single and a third inning walk, he has now reached base multiple times in 11 of those 13.

The Dirtbags will return home to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field next weekend as they host Cal Poly in a four-game series.
