Noble Deals in Game Two, Dirtbags Split Friday Doubleheader

4/2/2021 10:48:00 PM | Baseball

The Dirtbags split the doubleheader on Friday falling in game one, but won game two on the back of Jack Noble’s career start.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Long Beach State (5-6, 5-6 BWC) split their Friday doubleheader against UC San Diego (7-12, 4-2 BWC) losing game one, 11-10, before Jack Noble dominated game two leading the Dirtbags to a 6-1 victory.

Game one was a wild one to say the least. Long Beach State got the scoring started in the second inning on a Javier Rosales RBI single.

However, the lead would not last long as the Tritons plated five runs in the third. The Dirtbags responded with one in the fourth on a Jonathon Long RBI double, but UCSD answered right back with two more runs in the fifth.

In the sixth, the Dirtbags would send 12 men to the plate scoring seven runs total. Chase Luttrell got it started homering on the first pitch of the inning. Rosales would notch his second RBI single to bring in the second run of the inning and a bases loaded walk to Connor Kokx brought in the third.

Brennan Rozell would come up clutch with a game-tying single into right center as two runners came around to score before Luttrell would record his second hit of the inning, this time a two-run single, to give the Dirtbags a 7-5 lead.

Unfortunately, the bullpen could not hold the lead as Triton runs in the sixth and seventh would give them the lead back.

The Dirtbags tried to rally in the eighth plating a run on another bases loaded walk, but they would strand three and fall 11-10 in game one.

Alfredo Ruiz did not fare well the second time through the order as his day ended after just 2.1 innings. The lefty allowed five earned runs on six hits, a walk, and two hit batters while striking out five.

Game two was the Jack Noble show. The sophomore right-hander would throw the best game of his collegiate career setting career-highs in innings and strikeouts all without allowing a run. His final line was 6.1 innings pitched, three hits, zero runs, three walks, and 11 strikeouts. It marks the first double-digit strikeout game by a Dirtbag pitcher this season.

The offense gave Noble more than enough run support plating four runs in the top of the second. After a single and a walk put runners aboard, Chris Jimenez launched his second double of the season to plate the first run of the ballgame. Two batters later, Rosales continued his red hot day with a three-run blast to left field.

The Dirtbags would plate another run in the fourth as Luke Chung smoked one off the wall in right field recording his first career hit and first career RBI.

From there, it was cruise control. Noble would surrender a pair of walks in the bottom half of the fourth, but respond by retiring the next nine Triton hitters. Of the nine, he struck out five including striking out the side in the fifth.

UC San Diego would plate a run in the eighth, but the Dirtbags answered back with one of their own on a pinch hit RBI single from Aidan Malm in the top of the ninth as Long Beach State took game two, 6-1.

Rosales finished the day, going 4-for-9 in the two games with two runs scored and five RBI.

Luttrell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in game one, but saw his 10-game hit streak snapped in game two of the doubleheader.

Kokx extended his reached base streak to 12 straight games with a pair of walks in game one and an infield single in game two.

The Dirtbags will look to take the series in Saturday's finale at Triton Ballpark. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
