Senior Holland Shourds tied for second individually with a two-under par 70 on Monday.
YORBA LINDA, Calif. – A two-under par 70 from Holland Shourds was the top score for Long Beach State Women's Golf after the first round of the Big West Championship. The Beach finished the first round in third place overall.
Two more rounds over two more days of competition are still to come at the 2021 Big West Championship, hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Yorba Linda Country Club.
"We did well enough today to put ourselves in the final pairing tomorrow," said head coach Joey Cerulle. "We can clean up a few shots and look to rebound with a low score tomorrow. We looked good on the Par 5s and will try to continue to take advantage of them this week. Holland was steady today and is looking to continue to set the pace in round two."
The Beach had a very consistent day, with all five members of the team finishing the day in the top half of scores, led by the 70 from Shourds. Sophomore Hunter Pate was next in a tie for 13th with a 73. LBSU's trio of freshman were next, with Angelina Kim and Chloe Carraway both shooting 74 and Vanessa Richani returning to the lineup with a solid 75 in the first day.
Shourds had five birdies on the round, and was part of a three-way tie along with Caroline Cantlay and Nicole Neale of Cal Poly for second place after the first day.
After the first round, UC Irvine held the tournament lead by two strokes over Cal Poly led by Megan Yang's seven-under 65, the low score among the 45 competitors.
