Long Beach State grabbed two run-rule wins and has now won four straight.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – On Sunday the Beach walked off Loyola Marymount twice in back-to-back sixth inning run-rule wins, with the offense giving plenty of backing to two solid performances in the circle for Long Beach State.
In addition to the inning totals, the two games had similarities in the pitching performances, as both starters for the Beach had some struggles early but settled in to collect two wins.
Long Beach State (4-2) ended up trailing in the opener, as Loyola Marymount (10-10) struck first in the top of the second inning. Madalie Gomez led off the inning with a single, and after an error put two on, a single and a bases-loaded walk gave the Lions their first run.
White picked up two round balls to exit the inning, and did not allow a hit the rest of the way, facing one over the minimum in the next four innings as the LBSU offense went to work.
Opening the third inning with two straight walks, Long Beach State tied the game without a hit with a sacrifice bunt and then a sacrifice fly from Rylier Seip, and then opened up the game in the fourth. Alysssa Gonzalez singled to get on base in front of Suzy Brookshire, who tripled, and Cam Cecil brought home two more with a two-run home run.
Walks led to more damage in the fifth, loading the bases in front of pinch hitter Kyra Snyder, who singled home a run as did Cecil, and an RBI groundout brought home three more in the fifth to make the score 7-1.
Continuing to go to work in the sixth, Breezy Wise tripled to score Sophia Fernandez after a one-out single, and then Brookshire singled to score Wise, ending the game in a 9-1 victory for the Beach.
LMU opened the second game with back-to-back hits, putting freshman Shannon Haddad into an immediate jam, but the newcomer responded well, striking out the next three batters to get out of the inning with no damage and continue the momentum for the Beach.
Long Beach State broke the deadlock with two runs in the third inning. Lilyanna Martinez got the action started with an RBI single and a stolen base, and after a single from Hernandez scored the freshman, Wise followed with another hit to score Hernandez.
In the fourth, and RBI groundout made the score 3-0, and Wise had her second hit of the game to drive in two more runs, pushing the Long Beach State edge to 5-0. Ashley Machado hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and an RBI single from Cecil in the sixth inning shut the door on the Lions.
On the day, White improved to 2-1 with the win, while Haddad struck out five in her first shutout of the season, improving to 2-0.
Long Beach State will play its rain-delayed doubleheader at California Baptist this coming Tuesday, and then the Beach will be back in the LBSU Softball Complex to open up the Big West season at home against UC Riverside. That series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, and concludes on Sunday.
