RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Two big innings in support of a strong start from Isabella Alonso led to a sweep of UC Riverside for Beach softball as Long Beach State closed out the series with a 10-1 win in five innings over the Highlanders.
UC Riverside (3-17, 1-5 Big West) took the lead for the first time in the series in the first inning, loading the bases before Isabella Alonso hit Jackie Alday to bring home the first run of the game. A fantastic diving catch from Avery Weisbrook led to a double play to get the Beach out of the inning with no further scoring.
Long Beach State (17-11, 5-1 Big West) struck back quickly. Nina Sepulveda started the second with a double, and after a walk to Emily Dowden, the freshman scored on an RBI single from Kali Su'e. A walk to Miranda Gonzalez loaded the bases for the top of the order, and Lina Apodaca delivered another big hit, a two-run single up the middle. Weisbrook followed with a double to score two more, as the Beach took a 5-1 lead with a great response.
The Beach then put together another big inning in the fourth. Gonzalez worked another walk to start the inning, and Apodaca doubled to get the rally started. Weisbrook hustled to take second on a perfect bunt, and two straight sac flies added two more runs. Sepulveda got the Beach going one more time with a single, scoring on a double from Dowden, and then Dowden scored on an RBI hit from Audree Mendoza to push the lead to 10-1.
Isabella Alonso collected her ninth win of the season with a four-inning start, while Audrey Lopetegui worked a 1-2-3 fifth to finish off the run-rule victory.
Long Beach State returns home for a three-game conference series next weekend, hosting Hawai'i beginning on Friday, March 20. The Beach will also celebrate their alumni along with retired coach Kim Sowder on Saturday, March 21.
