Two Walkoff Losses For The Beach In Difficult Day At California Baptist

Long Beach State back home to start the conference season against UC Riverside on Saturday.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Long Beach State battled in two close games on Tuesday against California Baptist, but it was the Lancers that struck last in both games, taking a pair of walkoff wins 2-1 and 5-4 in the final non-conference games for the Beach.
Kellie White and Kerisa Viramontes had an old-fashioned pitcher's duel in the first game, with just the thinnest of margins separating Long Beach State (4-4) and California Baptist (12-14)
Neither team scored over the first five innings, as White finished with five strikeouts and giving up just four hits, while Viramontes allowed three total over seven innings pitched.
Breezy Wise finally broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth, cracking a deep home run to left center to give the Beach a 1-0 lead. California Baptist evened the score in the bottom half the same way, a solo shot from Katelyn Mangrello to tie up the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff walk and a bloop single put two on for the Lancers. A groundout looked to be the second out, but Martinez was unable to hold on at second, allowing the lead runner to come home and score as California Baptist walked off the opener 2-1, handing White a tough-luck loss.
More offense was featured in the second game. California Baptist opened up an early lead, scoring in the first on a two-out rally. Mikayla Jordan kept the inning going with a two-out double, and a single brought home the first run of the game. The Lancers added two more in the second inning on a two-run home run from Amanda Argomaniz, making the score 3-0 in favor of CBU.
The Beach bounced back in the fourth through the heart of the order. Alyssa Gonzalez and Suzy Brookshire picked up back-to-back singles, and after a walk to Ashley Machado, a Cam Cecil double brought home a pair and cut the lead to 3-2.
Long Beach State continued to climb back into the game. First the Beach tied the game with a solo home run to dead center from Brookshire in the sixth, and then LBSU took the lead in the seventh. After Sara Olson reached on an error to move to second with no outs, Naomi Hernandez advanced the runner and the freshman came home on an RBI single by Breezy Wise.
An Argomaniz single got the Lancers started in the bottom half, and after an error, a suicide squeeze from the Lancers tied the game at 4-4. With the go-ahead run at third, a fly ball with two outs appeared to extend the game, but Olson was unable to make the catch in center field and the Lancers stole another win, the second victory to come on an error.
Long Beach State returns to the LBSU Softball Complex and will open Big West Conference play with a three-game series against UC Riverside, starting with a doubleheader Saturday, March 20 at 1 p.m.
