Senior Holland Shourds led the way for Long Beach State, who finished 7th as a team.
SEAL BEACH, Calif. – On another beautiful day at Old Ranch Country Club, the 11 participating teams in the ninth edition of The Gold Rush completed their final round. USC extended its lead in the team competition on Tuesday, taking home the team title in the lone event hosted by Long Beach State golf this season.
"It was great to be back home hosting, seeing our friends and foes, and most importantly our fans," said Long Beach State head coach Joey Cerulle. "We truly appreciate everything that Old Ranch Country Club has done for us this week, and our rules officials and event staff ran a superb event."
USC, the top-ranked team in the field entering the tournament, finished under par as a team in the final round to close out the tournament even par over the course of three rounds. The Women of Troy took the top three spots individually as well, with Allisen Corpuz finishing 10-under with a 69-71-66—206, while Alyaa Abdulghany was 6-under par, and Maila Nam shot even par for the tournament.
For the Beach, senior Holland Shourds was the low score for the second straight tournament, carding another 73 on Tuesday to finish tied for 16th overall, a solid recovery after a tough first round. True freshman Angelina Kim continued to show improvement, also repeating her score from round two with a 74 to finish tied for 20th overall. Sophomore Hunter Pate and freshman Chloe Carraway, making her season debut, rounded out the scoring members for the Beach.
UNLV and Cal Poly finished in a tie for second place, while Fresno State took fourth and Sacramento State and BYU tied for fifth place, six strokes ahead of Long Beach State. Idaho, UC Irvine, Santa Clara and Wyoming rounded out the field.
"It wasn't our best showing with the slow start, but we are getting back into the groove of things and finished the event closer to where we want to be," said Cerulle. "We got better as a team and look to continue to grow into next week's event."
Long Beach State will be back in action next week, participating in the Bruin Wave Invitational held at The Saticoy Club. Three rounds will be played over three days, starting on March 1.
