Long Beach State Battles Cal Poly, Falls in Three on the Road

Nicole Hoff finished the match with 17 digs, while Kashauna Williams led the squad with 12 kills in the setback

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Long Beach State women's volleyball team battled Cal Poly in a three-set sweep [13-25, 23-25, 24-26] but came up short on Saturday night at Mott Athletic Center.
The Beach (9-14, 3-9 Big West) started out slow as the Mustangs (10-13, 8-4 Big West) took the first set by a 12-point differential. However, Long Beach State showed it grit as the Beach battled back in the next two sets pushing Cal Poly to the brink and forcing ovetime in the third set.
As a team, Long Beach State hit. 224 and were led by Kashauna Williams' 12 kills. Senior Avery Nelson came off the bench and added seven kills, six digs, and one ace, while Miranda Canez and Katie Kennedy each tallied six kills.
Sophomore setter Tia Chavira distributed 25 assists to go along with four kills, three digs and an ace, while sophomore libero Nicole Hoff logged 17 digs in the back row, and freshman Kameron Bacon posted four blocks at the net.
Cal Poly came out swinging as the Mustangs hit .522 in the first set and used an 8-0 run to break the game open against Long Beach State. With an 11-3 lead, Cal Poly held a comfortable lead the rest of the way and cruised to a 25-13 win.
Long Beach State regrouped and battled Cal Poly tough in the second set. The Beach opened the frame with three-straight points and extended their lead to 7-3. However, Cal Poly fought back to even the score at 7-all. From there, the two team traded points in a back and forth affair, until the Mustangs broke a 14-14 tie to take a 17-14 edge. Nelson served up a game-tying ace (20-20) as Cal Poly called a timeout. Once again, the game went back and forth until the Mustangs came away with a 25-23 win over the Beach.
Another close set saw the Beach and the Mustangs trade points back and forth until the very end. A kill from Nelson gave Long Beach State set point, but Cal Poly battled back and finished the set and match with three-straight points to win in overtime, 26-24.
The Mustangs were led by Tommi Stockham and Amy Hiatt who finished the contest with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Avalon DeNecochea recorded 40 assists, while adding six digs. In the backrow, Lea Ungar led the way with eight digs, while Meredith Phillips posted two blocks.
Long Beach State looks to snap its five-match losing skid at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Nov. 4. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Titan Gym.
