Long Beach State Cannot Overcome Early Deficit against Cal Poly

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State (9-6-2, 6-2-1 BWC) had their three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night. Cal Poly (12-6, 8-1 BWC) scored early on and held on handing the Beach a 1-0 loss.
It did not take long for the Mustangs' offense to get going, forcing Zora Standifer make a save in the second minute of the game. Seven minutes later, Cal Poly found the back of the net.
In the ninth minute a set piece into the box was headed down by the Beach defense, but right to Olivia Ortiz. The Cal Poly forward fired a shot right past Standifer and made it a 1-0 game.
Kaylee Ramirez recorded the first shot on goal for Long Beach State in the 17th minute, firing a shot from the middle of the box. Unfortunately, the Mustang keeper was able to make the save.
Going into the break, Cal Poly owned a nine-to-eight shot advantage with five shots on goal to just three from the Beach.
The second half was a physical, back-and-forth, 45 minutes of play with both sides matching each other in shots and saves.
The 51st minute represented the best scoring chance for LBSU in the half, as some great ball movement led to a Lena Silano shot in the box. However, a diving stop by the Poly goalie sent the ball out of play and kept the Beach off the board.
Silano totaled six shots on the night, three of which were on goal to lead all players. In goal, Standifer recorded six saves but suffers the first loss of her career.
Long Beach State will look to bounce back against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday. With a win, they will clinch a spot in the Big West Tournament.
