Battle for the Postseason: Long Beach State Hosts Cal Poly, UCSB

The Beach hosts their final two games of the season with a spot in the postseason on the line.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Riding a three-game winning streak, Long Beach State will host Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara in the final week of the regular season with a spot in the Big West Tournament on the line.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Beach extended their win streak to three straight with a 1-0 victory at CSUN last week.
Kayla Cannon netted the game-winner in the 27th minute with assists from Kaylee Ramirez and Lena Silano.
Morgan Houston-Shepherd and Zora Standifer each played one half in goal, combining for the team's third straight shutout.
 
TITLE RACE
• Long Beach State currently sits in second place in the Big West standings at 19 points. They are two points behind Cal Poly while leading UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara by one and three points, respectively. Cal State Fullerton also lurks in fifth place, just one point outside a conference tournament spot.
• Those top four teams will all face each other this week in a fight for not only spots in the Big West tournament, but for the regular season title. LBSU and CP face off on Thursday while UCI and UCSB matchup in Irvine. On Sunday, LBSU then hosts UCSB while UCI hosts CP.
 
FAVORITES TO WIN IT ALL
• The Big West preseason poll was announced on Thursday, Aug. 12 and the Beach found themselves in the top spot with 106 points, edging out defending champion Cal State Fullerton by two points. In addition to the top spot in the poll, senior defender Kaitlin Fregulia was named to the preseason All-Conference Team. She was the lone Beach representative and one of just two defenders on the list.
 
BEST DEFENSE IN THE BIG WEST
• With another clean sheet last week, Long Beach State now sits alone atop the Big West leaderboards, allowing just 13 goals through 16 games. Their .777 goals against average leads the conference and ranks 46th in the nation. The keepers also own a Big West-leading .835 save percentage that ranks 44th in all of NCAA.
 
CLEAN SHEETS
• The Beach defense continued their dominant trend recording their third straight 1-0 shutout victory over CSUN last week. It marks the first time the team has recorded three consecutive shutouts since the 2017 season.
 
ROAD WARRIORS
• Long Beach State opened up the season with six consecutive road matches and played 11 total this season. With the 1-0 victory at CSUN, the Beach have finished playing away games for the rest of the regular season finishing with a four-game road winning streak and a 7-2-2 overall record away from George Allen Field.
• The seven road wins are tied for the most in a single-season in program history, matching the 7-2 away record set back in 2008.
 
GAME-WINNERS GALORE
• The nine game-winning goals for the Beach this season have come from just two players this season, Lena Silano and Kayla Cannon.
• Silano's six game-winners this season is tied for the second-most in a single-season in program history while she also ranks in the top ten for most in a career.
• Cannon's game-winner at CSUN marked her third of the season which is tied for ninth most in a single-season and her four career game-winning goals is also in the top ten for a career.
 
SILANO'S HISTORIC SEASON IN THE MAKING
• With just two games remaining, Silano is among the league leaders in just about every offensive category, including the most game-winning goals. Her six game-winners are actually tied for the most in the nation while her 11 goals rank 22nd and her 1.56 points per game are 43rd.
• With numbers like that, she has also started etching her name into the Long Beach State record books. In single-season history, she is tied for second most game-winning goals and multi-goal games, tied for fifth most in goals scored, owns the seventh most shots with 64, and now ranks tied for tenth in total points.
• The Aguora Hills native is the second fastest in program history (in terms of fewest games) to 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 goals as well as 20 points in a season.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
• The Beach has accumulated four Player of the Week honors, three of which have been Defensive Players, marking the most in a single-season for the program since the 2015 season.
• In addition to the 4 Big West Conference weekly honors, Lena Silano has also earned a Top Drawer Team of the Week selection and two Honorable Mentions this season.
 
MAURICIO'S DYNASTY
• Prior to Coach Ingrassia taking the helm of Long Beach State, the team had not had a winning record in the Big West Conference. Since he took over in 2004, the Beach has been over .500 in all but three seasons (14-of-17).
• Over the the last decade, the Beach has been a dominant force in the Big West Conference claiming four Big West Tournament titles and two regular season titles. They have been to the conference tournament finals six different times since 2010.
• Beyond the Big West Conference, Long Beach State has made their presence known nationally as well. Since 2008, the team has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances including an Elite 8 appearance in 2011. That is the furthest run by any team in the Big West.
 
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
• Cal Poly enters the final week of the season atop the Big West standings with a 7-1 record in conference play and 11-6 overall.
• The Mustangs are coming off a 2-1 victory over UCSB last week and have won four straight.
• As a team, they rank second in the conference with 36 goals led by the duo of Nikki Trucco and Camille Lafaix. Trucco is third in the league with 10 goals and 21 total points while Lafaix is not far behind with eight goals and 19 points.
• Cal Poly has had four different players in goal throughout the season, but Ava Dorvillier has seen the most time at 10 games played. She owns a .750 save percentage allowing 1.63 GAA.
• Long Beach State trails the all-time series 9-12-4, but has won the last two meetings. The Beach has also won each of the last two matchups against the Mustangs at George Allen Field.
 
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UC Santa Barbara sits in fourth place with a 5-2-1 Big West record and 7-7-3 overall.
• The Gauchos are coming off a loss to Cal Poly, but have won three of their last four games.
• A defensive team, they have scored just 15 goals this season led by Emma Vanderhyden's three goals and three assists.
• Evann Smith has been the primary keeper and owns a league leading seven shutouts. She also ranks second with a .785 save percentage.
• Long Beach State leads the all-time series 17-12-1 and are 9-2 in the last 11 meetings. The Beach also owns a 9-3-1 record at home against the Gauchos.
