Beach Women’s Basketball Wins Seventh Straight with Victory at UC San Diego

Jasmine Hardy comes in clutch in the final minute of action to lift LBSU to a 54-50 road win

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In a back-and-fourth game that saw Long Beach State and UC San Diego exchange leads seven times, the Beach came out victorious thanks to a clutch three-pointer by Jasmine Hardy with 37.9 seconds remaining in the game. Hardy's three gave the Beach the lead for good as LBSU went on to defeat UCSD, 54-50, en route to winning its seventh-straight contest.
Long Beach State (8-1, 7-0 Big West) got off to a slow start, shooting just 18.8 percent in the first quarter, but showed its resilience as the Beach bounced back and used several scoring runs to turn a deficit into a lead.
UC San Diego (2-4, 2-4 Big West) fought hard and stayed competitive as the Tritons held a 28-27 lead at halftime.
Following the intermission, the Beach came out hot. LBSU went on a 10-0 run and took a 37-30 lead over the Tritons. But UC San Diego would not quit. The Tritons chipped away at the Beach lead and cut Long Beach State's lead down to four (43-39) heading in to the fourth quarter.
UC San Diego opened the final frame on a 6-0 run as the Tritons took a 45-43 lead over Long Beach State continuing the back-and-forth battle. LBSU was once again unfazed as Patricia Chung evened the score with a jumper at 5:52, which gave the freshman a new career-high. Chung would go on to finish the game with 15 points.
With one minute remaining in the regulation, the Beach found themselves down 50-48. Hardy got a solid pass from Justina King and drained her third triple of the game to give Long Beach State a 51-50 edge over the Tritons with less than 40 seconds left to play.
Following Hardy's key three-pointer, King sunk a pair of big free throws, before Myrrah Joseph sealed the win with a made free throw with just one tick left of the clock as the Beach collected their seventh-straight victory.
Long Beach State was solid defensively as the Beach forced the Tritons into 22 turnovers. The gritty Beach earned 14 steals and converted 16 points off turnovers.
The Beach were led offensively by King, Hardy, and Chung who each finished the game with 15 points. Joseph added five points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Chung also contributed eight boards to go along with three assists, while King and Hardy each posted five rebounds.
UCSD's Sydney Brown led all scorers with 23 points and 15 rebounds for a double-double.
Long Beach State and UC San Diego will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m., at RIMAC Arena. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
