The Beach is excited to welcome Cam Cecil from Iowa, Ashley Machado from San Jose State and Addison Kosrencich from Palos Verdes High School to the program.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State's incoming class for 2021 continues to grow as two Division I transfers have made their commitment to join the Beach next season, as has a sixth local high schooler. Cam Cecil, an infielder from Iowa and Ashley Maldonado, a catcher from San Jose State will both be with the Beach when competition resumes. Additionally, The Beach secured a commitment from pitcher Addison Kostrencich following her graduation from Palos Verdes High School.
The trio joins five incoming freshman from the Southern California area who previously committed to Long Beach State in Cassie Camou, Sophia Fernandez, Tiffany Ilff, Sinclair Lawhorn, and Lilyanna Martinez.
Cam Cecil, 5-6, INF, Dana Point, Calif. (Dana Hills HS/Iowa)
The first to commit, Cam Cecil will have three seasons of eligibility left after playing the 2019 season with the Hawkeyes while receiving eligibility relief for the seven games she played in 2020. Primarily both shortstop and in the outfield, Cecil was among the Iowa team leaders in batting during the 2019 season with a .259 batting average, starting 28 games and making just one error on the year. She ended the season on a tear with five multi-hit games in the last 11 contests of the season.
A league MVP in her final season at Dana Hills High School, Cecil was a four-year letterwinner and hit .400 as a senior after hitting .397 as a junior. She also played club softball with the California Cruisers.
Sowder on Cecil:
"Cam is very athletic and brings more depth to our middle infield positions. She has good speed and range with a strong arm. Offensively, she brings versatility as a triple threat from the left side, being able to slap, hit for contact and hit for power."
Ashley Machado, 5-3, C, Bellflower, Calif. (Warren HS/El Camino CC/San Jose State)
Ashley Machado will immediately impact Long Beach State's catching depth after a circuitous route to the Beach. An All-CIF selection as a senior at Warren High School in Downey as a four-year letterwinner, Machado went on to star for two seasons at El Camino CC.
A Junior College All-American, Machado hit .339 with nine doubles and six triples while stealing 30 bases and walking 22 times as a sophomore in 2018, earning first-team all-conference honors as well. Moving on to San Jose State, Machado redshirted during the 2019 season and played in 12 games for the Spartans in 2020, starting six behind the plate before the season was cut short. She will join LBSU with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Sowder on Machado:
"Ashley fills a big need for us behind the plate in a place where we were lacking depth. She has good experience and maturity behind the plate. I like her quickness as a catcher and she gives us another option from the left side offensively."
Addison Kostrencich, 5-11, P, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. (Palos Verdes HS)
Long Beach State's third spring addition is Addison Kostrencich, a pitcher from Rancho Palos Verdes. A three-time first-team All-Bay League selection, Kostrencich had an ERA of 0.70 as a senior and finished her career with 316 strikeouts in 313 innings pitched.
Playing club softball with Firecrakers, Kostrencich finished in the Top 8 at both the U16 and U18 level, and also was selected for the U19 Croatian National Team.
Sowder on Kostrencich:
"Addy has grown up around Beach Athletics, being a part of our Beach Kids Club and attending many camps when she was younger. She has developed into a very good pitcher, throwing with good velocity and spin. She continues to grow both physically and as a pitcher every time we watch her and we are so thrilled to have her join our Beach family."
