LONG BEACH, Calif. — In a defensive battle with No. 10 UC San Diego, Sarah Barker scored three goals for No. 15 Long Beach State to lift the Beach to a 6-4 win over the Tritons to open Big West play Saturday afternoon at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
After the midway point in the first quarter, Barker found the back of the cage to give Long Beach a 1-0 lead. Junior Elena Kotanchyan added to that lead when she scored on a sky hook to give LBSU a 2-0 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, UC San Diego cut the lead to 2-1 when she scored on a powerplay with 6:45 remaining. That was the last goal of the half as both teams continued to stifle each other with solid goalie play.
Eirini Patras finished the game with eight saves and three steals as she made numerous stops to stifle the Tritons' offense.
In the cage for the Tritons, Bennett Bugelli had 12 saves and two steals as she kept the beach scoreless in the second quarter.
Katie Dill got things going for the Beach in the third quarter when she scored on a powerplay to give Long Beach a 3-1 lead with 5:39 left in the period.
But, UCSD tied the game up after Grace Pevehouse and Tera Richardson scored on powerplays heading into the fourth period.
Barker scored her second goal 19 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Long Beach a 4-3 lead.
After Pevehouse scored to tie the game at 4, Gabrielle Matafora-Adams found the back of the cage on a powerplay to give LBSU the lead for good.
Barker scored her third goal of the game when she drilled a shot with 29 seconds left in the game.
The Beach will be back in action on Thursday when they host No. 22 Bucknell at 7 p.m.
