Long Beach State goes 1-2 at Zuma Beach

ZUMA BEACH, Calif. — The No. 14 Long Beach State Beach Volleyball team finished the day strong with a top-10 victory over host No. 9 Pepperdine at the Waves' Invite. Long Beach State opened the day with a 4-1 setback to No. 10 Stetson, before falling to No. 14 South Carolina, 3-2. However the Beach showed their resiliency as they battled back for a gritty 3-2 victory over No. 9 Pepperdine to finish the day.

"The team showed a tremendous amount of grit and resiliency today," LBSU head coach Mike Campbell said. "I'm very proud of our effort. To lose the first two duals in such a close fashion and then proceed to beat the host team, Pepperdine, after a back-to-back against South Carolina; that says a lot about the fight of this team.

"We dropped the first set on 4-of-5 courts, and fought back in enemy territory to put ourselves in a position to clinch the dual on courts one and four. We learned a valuable lesson today about ourselves as competitors, and we are all ready to bring even more fight tomorrow with two Top 10 opponents in LMU and a rematch with Stetson."

After going 1-2 at the Waves' Invite at Zuma Beach, Long Beach State moves to 4-2 on the year.

The Beach came out fighting Saturday morning against No. 10 Stetson (7-3) but fell to the Hatters in a 4-1 contest.

The number two pairing of Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy were defeated by Carly Perales and Sunniva Helland-Hansen to give Stetson the first point on the board. Shortly after, Makenzie Griffin and Alice Pratesi fell to Shae Henson and Yasmin Kuck, to fall behind 0-2.

The Beach then countered the 0-2 deficit with a win by the No. 4 pairing of Claire Newlander and Nicci Reinking.

Court 1 and 5 went to three sets to decide the game, but the Beach lost on both courts, ending the duel 4-1.

The second match of the day was a nail-biting 2-3 heartbreaker against No. 15 South Carolina (4-5). The Gamecocks got the first two points winning on courts two and three. The Beach countered winning on courts four and five.

Everyone circled around court one to decide the outcome of the match. Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs won the first set 21-18 against Jess Vastine and Carly Schnieder before the Gamecocks came back to win the second set 21-15. The Beach went up 12-8 in the third set before South Carolina came fighting back to win the set, match, and dual 18-16.

Coming off the tough loss to the Gamecocks, Long Beach State dropped its first two sets to Waves as Pepperdine took a quick 2-0 lead after winning at courts three and two.

Down 2-0, Long Beach State battled back as Jillian Rodriguez and Emily Mattoon knocked off Peyton Lewis and Maddy Bailey, 21-11, 21-15 to get the Beach on the board.

At No. 4 Reinking and Newlander followed suit as the duo evened the match at 2-2 with a three-set win over Melanie Paul and Simone Priebe, 15-21, 21-18, 15-9.

With the match all knotted up, the tandem of Molina and Spriggs at No. 1 found themselves in a thrilling battle with Brook Bauer and Deahna Kraft. Bauer and Kraft took the first set 21-14, but Molina and Springs forced a third set with a 21-16 set two win. In the fifth set, Molina and Spriggs turned in a gritty performance as they edged out Bauer and Kraft for a 15-11 victory as Long Beach State came away with the 3-2 victory.

The Beach will be back in action on Sunday, March 8 as they go up against No. 8 Loyola Marymount and No. 10 Stetson in Los Angeles, Calif. The Beach and the Lions will face off at 11 a.m., and LBSU will close the day with a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Hatters.
