The Beach suffered losses to No. 8 LMU and No. 10 Stetson on Sunday
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The No. 14 Long Beach State beach volleyball team put up a fight against a pair of top 10 programs, but came up just short. The Beach opened the day with a 3-2 loss to host No. 8 Loyola Marymount, before dropping a 3-2 decision to No. 10 Stetson on Sunday afternoon.
The Beach (4-4) went back and forth with both LMU (6-3) and Stetson (8-6) and were deadlocked at two sets apiece as both matches were decided in close three-set contests.
LBSU and LMU got the day started and the Lions got on the board first as the No. 3 pair of Georgia Fusco and Lacy Haddock defeated Mackenzie Griffin and Alice Pratesi, 21-11, 21-7. But the Beach were quick to fight back and even the score as Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs took down LMU's No. 1 duo of Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marolf, 21-16, 24-22.
LMU went back up 3-1 after the No. 2 tandem defeated Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy, 22-20, 21-12,. But once again the Beach tied things up as Jillian Rodriguez and Emily Mattoon earned a 26-24, 21-16 win over Jessie Prichard and Cassie Chinn.
With all eyes on the Court No. 4, Nicci Reinking and Claire Newlander battled LMU's Emma Doud and Savannah Slattery. The Beach took the first set 21-19, and the Lions took the second 21-17. The two teams battled each other point for point, but LMU prevailed 15-13.
Following the close lost to the host Lions, Long Beach State went up against No. 10 Stetson. Much like the first match, the Beach and the Hatters battled each other back and forth until they found themselves tied at 2-2 with all eyes on Court No. 3.
Griffin and Pratesi were fighting hard against Lauren Domel and Shae Henson and found themselves in a three-set battle after Stetson claimed set one 21-19 and LBSU took the second set 21-19. With the game and match on the line, the Hatters prevailed coming away with a 17-15 set win as the Beach suffered its second close loss of the day.
The Beach will be back in action on Tuesday, March 10 when they take on Utah and Irvine Valley College at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively in Irvine, Calif.
