Smith becomes the first multi-event indoor selection in modern program history.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Jason Smith will continue his outstanding career with one more indoor meet, qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Albuquerque N.M. in both the Long Jump as well as the High Jump.
Smith becomes the 17th indoor qualifier in the modern era for Long Beach State, and is the first ever qualifier in two events.
In Smith's signature event, the long jump, the senior has already set the school record at an elite meet, participating in the USA Indoor Track and Field championships and besting the previous record with a mark of 7.88m, breaking the record he shared with 2019 indoor national championship qualifier Kemonie Briggs by three inches.
Seeded tenth in the long jump, Smith also qualified to compete in the high jump as well. Clearing 2.22m (7-03.25) earlier this year at the Don Kirby Invitational, also in Albuquerque, that mark was good enough for 15th in the country to make Smith eligible to finish as an All-American in two disciplines.
Smith is the only qualifier to the NCAA Indoor Championships from the Big West Conference.
Held in Albuquerque on March 13 and 14, the entire championship will be broadcast on ESPN3. Check back throughout the next week on Smith's journey to the NCAAs.
