The Beach Finishes Triton Invitational With Win

No. 12 Long Beach State defeats Indiana University in the seventh-place match on Sunday.
LA JOLLA, Calif. — Junior Elena Kotanchyan scored five goals and No. 12 Long Beach State held off Indiana University 10-9 in the seventh-place match at the Triton Invitational on Sunday.
In the first quarter, Kotanchyan, Olivia Grim and Anne de Kleer each scored a goal as the Beach and Indiana were knotted at three.
The Beach (7-2) took a 5-4 lead at halftime after goals from Orsi Hertzka and Kotanchyan.
Kotanchyan continued to find the cage scoring three more goals in the third quarter to take a 9-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the final period, Hertzka scored her second goal to help the Beach hold off the Hoosiers comeback attempt.
The win came on the heels of LBSU falling to No. 9 UC Santa Barbara 8-5 Sunday morning.
In the early Big West matchup, the Beach and Gauchos were knotted at two after the first quarter.
UCSB's Sarah Snyder scored two goals in the second period to give the Gauchos a 5-4 lead at the break.
In the second half, LBSU was held to one goal as their comeback attempt fell short.
Eirini Patra had eight saves in the cage for the Beach.
Long Beach State will be back in action when the Beach travels to UC Irvine to compete in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Feb. 21-23.
