No. 12 Long Beach State Splits Contests At Triton Invitational

On first day of the tournament, the Beach defeated No. 16 LMU and lost to No.1 USC.

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Continuing their road trip the Long Beach State women's water polo team split its contests at the Triton Invitational on Saturday in San Diego.
Starting the day off against No. 16 Loyola Marymount University, the Beach (6-1) once against found themselves in a tough battle.
            After trailing LMU 3-2 after the first quarter, Anne de Kleer scored two goals to give the Beach a 5-4 heading into halftime.
            In the third quarter, de Kleer scored two more of her five goals as LBSU took a 7-6 lead heading into the final period.
            After taking an 8-6 lead on de Kleer's fifth goal at the 2:36 mark, the Beach gave up one more goal to take the eventual 8-7 victory.
            In the cage, Eirini Patra had six saves. Paige Bennett, Elena Kotanchyan and Jamie Oberman each scored a goal in the contest.
            After their victory against LMU, the Beach found themselves up against No. 1 USC.
            In a hard-fought game LBSU lost to the Trojans 15-6.
            Bennett got the LBSU on the board when she found the back of the cage as the Beach trailed USC 3-1 after the first quarter.
            Orsi Hertzka scored two goals in the second period as LBSU went into halftime trailing 6-3.
            In the second half, de Kleer, Kotanchyan and Sarah Barker scored one goal as the Beach's comeback attempt fell short.
            "We put together a strong game," Associate Head Coach Shana Welch said. "We have some work to do moving forward, but we are a resilient as a team and didn't give up. We are looking forward to two strong games tomorrow."
            The Beach will finish play at the Triton Invitational with two games on Sunday when they take on UC Santa Barbara at 8:30 a.m. and then wrap up play in the afternoon.
