Beach Indoor Track Has Strong Field Day at Air Force Team Challenge

2/7/2020 10:17:00 PM | Indoor Track

Long Beach State continued its indoor track season on Friday at the Air Force Team Challenge, led by a strong performance from the throws squad. Charlie Vernoy was a double champion in the throws and Jason Smith was a double champion in the jumps to continue his strong start to the season.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Long Beach State took part in the Air Force Team Challenge on Friday, taking part in its second indoor meet of the 2020 season. LBSU got solid performances from the throws squad to headline the one-day meet.

Senior Charlie Vernoy had a double-victory in the throws, recording a 51-02.25 in the men's shot put to lead a sweep for the Beach in the event. Teammates Alec Jones (49-09) and Gavin Fua (49-08.50) followed Vernoy in the top three. Vernoy also won the men's weight throw with a heave of 63-07.50, leading five Beach throwers in the top seven with Sebastian Coleman in third, Fua in fourth, Jones in fifth and Anthony Sommers in seventh.

In the jumps, senior Jason Smith broke meet records in the long jump and the high jump. His mark in the long jump was 25-04.75, less than three inches off his school-record-tying leap one week ago. However, that number was good enough to break the meet record held by former LBSU standout Willie Alexander. Smith's mark in the high jump was also a meet record, and could have been even better. He successfully cleared 7-01.75 to win the event, and nearly cleared 7-03 in his final attempt.

On the track, Michael Hull-Littlejohn was second in the 60m with a time of 6.840, just 0.002 off the winner. On the women's side of the 60m, Madison Golden also secured a runner-up finish with a time of 7.72.

Long Beach State will be back in action next weekend at the Don Kirby Elite in Albuquerque, N.M., which is also the site of the NCAA Indoor Championships, Mar. 13-14.
