
Jason Smith Wins High Jump on Day One of Don Kirby Elite

The senior continued his strong indoor season with another event win in the men’s high jump on Thursday. Smith jumped a 7-03.25 to rank 11th in the nation this season while placing him second on Long Beach State’s all-time list.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Long Beach State opened the Don Kirby Elite on Thursday, and senior Jason Smith again had a strong day in the jumps. Focusing on the high jump at this meet, Smith posted a PR of 7-03.25 to win the event. That mark ranks 11th in the nation and is good for second place on LBSU's all-time indoor list.
Smith has now won at least one event in all three meets this season, and in this event he finished ahead of athletes from Oregon, UCLA and Washington State. Now Smith will turn his attention to the 2020 USATF Indoor Championships on Friday, also hosted at the ABQ Convention Center. Smith is the No. 3 entrant in that event, which will take place at 7:10 p.m. MT, following the conclusion of the Don Kirby Elite.
Elsewhere in Thursday's action, Cole Bosley took second in the men's 600m with a 1:22.45 and Ricky Villa finished fourth in 1:25.76. In the women's 200, Madison Golden ran a 24.98 to rank ninth on LBSU's all-time indoor list.
In the throws, Amanda Truong recorded a heave of 54-09.25 in the women's weight throw. That ranks sixth on the all-time list for the Beach. Charlie Vernoy was fourth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 63-05.
The Don Kirby Elite will conclude on Friday, with more of an emphasis on the track in day two.
