Long Beach State Sweeps Santa Clara Saturday Morning

The Beach defeat the Broncos 5-0.
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Long Beach State (3-0) played an early match Saturday morning, defeating Santa Clara (0-9) 5-0 at the LBSU Sand Courts.
Long Beach State started the day out strong with a quick win by the number five pairing of Jillian Rodriguez and Emily Mattoon who took down Maeve Davitt and Natalia Rentsch 21-14, 21-5. LBSU's number four pairing of Makenzie Griffin and Alice Pratesi had a chance to sweep but a few unforced errors forced them into a third set, eventually winning 21-16, 23-25, 15-9.
Heading into the second round of matches, the number three pairing of Madison Smeathers and Nicci Reinking got the third point on the board to solidify the win with the scores of 21-13, 21-16. Mari Molina and Tyler Spriggs, who have been anchoring the number one spot, won comfortably 21-14, 21-14 against Michelle Shaffer and Kathryn Decker of Santa Clara.
After losing the first set 19-21, the number two pairing of Sydney Stevens and Katie Kennedy came fighting back to push the game into a third set and win 19-21, 21-18, 15-6.
The Beach will be on the road next weekend at Zuma Beach where they will take on Stetson, South Carolina and Pepperdine on March 7and LMU and Stetson on March 8 in Los Angeles.
