Beach Softball Opens San Diego Classic With Road Win At USD

Home runs from Seip, Wise lift Long Beach State over the Toreros on the road.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Home runs from Rylie Seip and Breezy Wise were plenty of support for Kellie White, as Long Beach State went on the road and the senior grabbed the win in her home town in a 4-2 win over USD Thursday night.
A big fourth inning was the key for Long Beach State (9-7) on the way to their first true road win at San Diego (7-9) after two losses at No. 7 Arizona earlier in the year. Sara Olson was able to reach on an error and Rylie Seip followed by cracking her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to give the Beach their first lead.
Alyssa Gonzalez followed by reaching on an error, and came home to give the Beach a 3-0 lead after back-to-back singles from Abby Lockman and Naomi Hernandez.
San Diego would cut into the lead, getting leadoff hits in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Long Beach State and White were able to limit the damage and remain in the lead.
Breezy Wise gave the Beach an important insurance run in the seventh, hitting a leadoff home run to dead center as a pinch hitter and putting LBSU on top 4-2.
The Toereros picked up a one-out single in the seventh and had two on after an error, but the Beach cut down the lead runner for the second out and then a groundout to Gonzalez finished off the game.
White finished with six strikeouts in her fifth complete game of the season, improving to 5-3 on the year. Lockman had a pair of hits, and Seip's home run was her second of the year.
Long Beach State will play two games hosted by San Diego State Friday, facing St. John's at 11:30 a.m. followed by San Jose State at 2 p.m.
