Softball Drops Two Close Ones Friday At San Diego Classic

2/28/2020 4:34:00 PM | Softball

Junior Alyssa Gonzalez hit a two-run homer against San Jose State, her first of the year.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Long Beach State ended up on the wrong side of a pair of close games Friday, falling 2-0 in a pitcher's duel with St. John's and then seeing a late rally come up just short in a 4-3 defeat against San Jose State.

In the opening game of the day, Long Beach State (9-9) turned to sophomore Presley Miraglia who made her first career start. Tossing a career high in innings, Miraglia cruised through the first three innings after giving up a walk to start the game, retiring nine straight.

In the fourth, another leadoff walk would lead to the only runs of the games however. Miraglia was able to get the first out with a strikeout of Katilin Mattera, but cleanup hitter Peyton Cody broke the deadlock with a triple, and Kalei Sorensen followed with a single to put St. John's (5-11) on top 2-0.

Offensively, Long Beach State wasn't able to string anything together against Erin Brown, who finished off the complete game shutout by scattering four Beach hits as LBSU left five on base but weren't able to pick up a run in the opener.

San Jose State (17-2) took an early lead against Long Beach State, as the Spartans were able to push Makayla Englestad across following a one-out single on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning.

Long Beach State bounced back behind a two-run home run from Alyssa Gonzalez, the first of the season from the junior to regain the lead. Ashley Coleman and Kellie White combined for four innings of scoreless ball from there, but a three-run homer from Jenessa Lozano in the sixth put the Spartans back on top 4-2.

Sara Olson tripled to start the sixth and an RBI single from Rylie Seip scored the freshman to cut the lead to one, but Shannon Haddad was able to work around the heart of the Long Beach State lineup to end the threat and hold on for the win.

Long Beach State will play two more games Saturday in San Diego. First, Long Beach State will face brown at 2 p.m. before closing the tournament against North Dakota immediately following at 4:30 p.m.
