No. 12 Long Beach State Wraps Up Barbara Kalbus Invitational Play With Loss To SDSU

The Aztecs score in final nine seconds to defeat the Beach, 10-9.
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Orsi Hertzka, Elena Kotanchyan and Anne de Kleer each scored two goals Sunday morning as No. 12 Long Beach State fell to No. 22 San Diego State 10-9 to in the thirteenth-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.
It was a back-and-forth match after SDSU took a 3-0 lead with 3:05 remaining in the first quarter.
The Beach (8-5) started to mount their comeback as Hertzka and de Kleer each found the back of the cage on powerplays to cut SDSU's lead to 3-2 after the first quarter.
Kotanchyan kickstarted a 3-0 run by the Beach when she scored in the first minute of the second period to tie the game.
Senior Paige Bennett gave the Beach their first lead when found the back of the cage and Katie Dill gave the Beach a 5-3 lead when she scored on a 6-on-4 opportunity.
After exchanging goals, SDSU's Emily Bennett scored with 30 seconds left to cut LBSU's lead to 6-5 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Aztecs went on a 2-0 run to take a 7-6 lead with 5:21 left in the period.
Hertzka and Kotanchyan's second goals gave the Beach an 8-7 in the third quarter with 1:31 left.
SDSU's Isabelle Hastings scored her third goal to tie the game at 8 heading into the final period.
In the final period, there was no scoring until LBSU's Sarah Barker found the back of the cage to give the Beach a 9-8 lead with 2:32 left in the game.
LBSU's offense went cold and SDSU took advantage as they tied the game at 9 with 59 seconds remaining in the game.
SDSU's Delaney Binette scored the eventual game-winner with nine seconds left in the game.
With time winding down, Hertzka's final shot attempt would be off the mark.
In the cage, senior Eirini Patras had 14 saves.
Overall, the Beach went 1-3 at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational and will look to bounce back when the team heads to Michigan for the Wolvering Invite next weekend.
"That's the thing about our game, you win some and you lose some," associate head coach Shana Welch said. "Some weekends are better than others and on any given day, any of these teams can come out on top and this weekend wasn't our weekend. We didn't win the games we needed to win, but in order for us to grow as a team we have to be able to move forward and it'll make us stronger as a team."
